They are all connected to a windows 2003 smb server not using WSUS. I have tried safe mode, disabling the firewall, logging onto the local computer instead of domain, and repairing the windows update services. I've rebooted the firewall and server still no change. The server can download and install updates but none of the clients can. I know that as soon as the computers go on the domain they can no longer get updates. Before one joins the domain they can.
