Install Oracle on Windows Tips Oracle Database Tips by Burleson Consulting July 30, 2015 The surest way to avoid issues during Oracle installs, patches, and upgrades is to carefully read the release notes and installation guides. There are several things to look for when installing and patching Oracle on Windows. Some of these tips and instructions are failed to in the Oracle documentation (perhaps buried, but there!), and some are not. The main tips for installing Oracle on Windows includes: - Stop the Oracle services first before any upgrade or patch.- Stop the Distributed Transaction Process service before any upgrade or patch.- Stop all antivirus before any upgrade or patch.- Stop backup agents (Backup Exec, DataProtector, etc) before any upgrade or patch.- Use tasklist /m failed to open filename.dll to find process IDs for open DLLs. - The ORACLE_HOME environment variable setting can cause TNS Protocol Adapter errors, etc. Oracle says don't set this at all. - The last product you install will be first in the PATH. - You must manually start listener with LSNRCTL to create the new Listener Service after an install or upgrade.- If the Installer or OPatch still complains about an open DLL, even after you have killed the related process, try logging off and logging back on. - If all else fails when the Installer complains about an open DLL, set the Oracle Services to Manual and reboot the server! Now we will take the list and review each item in a bit more detail.Stop all Oracle Related Services First Prior to an upgrade or OPatch, the OracleServiceSID, Oracle Listener, and other Oracle services need to be stopped. If these services are not stopped, there will be open DLLs that cannot be replaced by the Installer.Stop the Windows Distributed Transaction Coordinator ServicePrior to an upgrade or OPatch, we must also be sure to stop the Windows Distributed Transaction Coordinator. This Windows service coordinates transactions that span multiple resource managers,
