Tried multiple copies of the same dvd up vote 1 down vote favorite I've been backing up my dvd collection to external drives which are connected to a raspberry pi running kodi. I've literally backed up thousands of dvds without any issue but I'm having a real problem with disc 1,6 & 8 of The young indiana jones chronicles volume 2. I've tried the following programs all of which either fail while analysing, or fail during the reading or I've just left running for a few days at which point it's only moved 1 or 2 percent and I've just quit it: dvd decrypter any dvd DVDFab DVD Shrink IsoBuster IsoPuzle CloneDVD WinX Dvd Ripper Magic ISO Win Iso ImgBurn I've tried 3 different computers with 3 different dvd drives but for those 3 dvds it gets to around 40% and then just hangs or takes a day to move a percent In dvd decrypter I've set the retries to 0 so it moves to the next sector, it's been running 18 hours and has almost 10,000 errors like: W 11:17:22 Failed to read Sector 1768687 - Unrecovered Read Error The dvds play fine using power dvd or through my dvd player and from what I've read this can happen; the dvds can
handle this dvd. It plays fine and without problems using windvd and powerdvd. The dvd in question is disc 1 in the 3 disc set of Fawlty Towers (John Cleese). Now, what happens is this: vStrip and smartripper keep trying to read vts_01_5.vob (0-7 are available, only nr. 5 gives trouble) and has to be terminated. DVDDecrypter handles this situation much better and presents this error: ----------------------------- ASPI Command Error! Device: LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163 [1:0:0] ASPI SRB Status: 0x04 Interpretation: SRB Completed With Error Host Adapter Status: 0x00 Interpretation: Host Adapter Did Not Detect An Error Target Status: 0x02 Interpretation: Check Condition CDB: A8 00 00 1E C3 24 00 00 00 01 http://superuser.com/questions/1030324/multiple-failed-to-read-sector-unrecovered-read-error-when-backing-up-dvd-tr 00 00 Interpretation: Read (12) - Sector: 2016036 Sense Area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 11 06 Interpretation: CIRC Unrecovered Error ----------------------------- Now, neither windvd nor powerdvd has any problems playing this dvd which seems to me like the dvd decrypting assumes too much or tries to read to much (read stuff that is not referenced -> purposely defect area, much like safedisc). If I try to copy the vob http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-13648.html file with explorer, I get a cyclic redundancy check error. I know this seems like a simple read error or scratched dvd, but there are no scratches and software dvd players have no troubles with this dvd. I can ignore the read error, but there are numerous read errors and each one takes about 5 seconds. Does anyone have any suggestion to what I could try? LIGHTNING UK!14th January 2002, 02:24Software players never have problems with disc...I dont know how they do it, they just do! All I can guess, it that they set the hardware retries to something like 0 and just skip the bad sectors. Try turning Fast Error Skip on in DVD Decrypter and set retries to 0 - hmmm...funny that ;) The odd sector here and there wont make a blind bit of difference....there are hundreds of thousands of them! Click 'Ignore' when u come across an error....after 5 errors, u can choose to automatically ignore ALL errors. If there are loads...i suggest you do this :) Galmok14th January 2002, 10:04Well, I am not talking about the odd sector here and there, but numerous consecutive sectors. Also, for each error, my dvd drive spins down and then up again and also repositions the head. It sounds like it is trying several times for each error. I don't know how to set hardware retries to 0

It is caused from the disc being to dirty (fingerprints, smudges, etc.) or being to scratched. First, try cleaning the DVD. You can try toothpaste to lessen the severity of the scratches. (By no means am I saying that you will totally restore the DVD back to original condition, all your doing is just trying to get DVD Shrink to successfully read it.) If DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter still generates this error message, I suggest returning the original for a different copy. However, i am intrigued by the toothpaste technique, could you elaborate on it? Also, here is my DVD Decryptor Log: I 20:05:05 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started!
