First one as a slave to our current Windows DNS Servers which all works fine, but there is an additional requirement: an Interface. So I installed Webmin, which came with the bind-module preinstalled and everything works fine, except for restarting the Server. I can stop it, but I cannot start it again. I get an Failed to start BIND : Unknown error using the Webmin-Interface. Using sudo service bind9 start works perfectly. TL;DR: Bind works perfectly, but I can't start the bind service through the Webmin-Interface The Syslog sais: Jan 11 14:28:18 SRVNT151 named[20133]: loading configuration from '/etc/bind/named.conf' Jan 11 14:28:18 SRVNT151 named[20133]: /etc/bind/named.conf.local:34: open: /etc/bind/rndc.key: permission denied Jan 11 14:28:18 SRVNT151 named[20133]: loading configuration: permission denied Jan 11 14:28:18 SRVNT151 named[20133]: exiting (due to fatal error) So my guess is, that it for some reason tries to start bind from another user, because the bind user has

For this, I have registered 2 child nameservers at my domain registrar, and in Webmin->Bind I have set up a new zone for this domain. In this zone, i have specified 2 nameserver records- one each for ns1 and ns2. Also, I have defined 2 address records- one each for ns1.mydomain.com -> IP Address #1 and for ns2.mydomain.com -> IP Address #2 However when I try to start BIND in Webmin, I get the following error-- Failed to start BIND : Starting named: Error in named configuration: zone mydomain.com/IN: has no NS records zone mydomain.com/IN: not loaded due to errors. _default/mydomain.com/IN: bad zone [FAILED] dns bind webmin share|improve this question edited Jan 20 '13 at 2:32 cpast 1,98411023 asked Feb 9 '12 at 15:22 Arvind 140129 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted A common reason for this error is missing the trailing periods on domain names. You might have something similar to mydomain.com IN NS ns1.mydomain.com. In the zone file. If so, try replaceing with mydomain.com. IN NS ns1.mydomain.com. Notice the period after mydomain.com. share|improve this answer answered Feb 9 '12 at 15:56 Jon Moore 712 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote See the output of the hostname command. In my case the output of the hostname command was server.mydomain.com, so there must be an "A record" for you machine's name: server.mydomain.com. IN A 10.10.10.10 where server.mydomain.com is my machine's name 10.10.10.10 is my machine's IP on which I wish to run bind(dns). share|improve this answer edited Dec 4 '12 at 11:46 pnuts 4,92831836 answered Dec 4 '12 at 9:22 gaurav 112 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of se
