how to overcome this issue and get the hypervisor running would be greatly appreciated. thanks. Radek . My solution was: I gave the *.vhd file the permission 'full' for the group 'Users' Greetings from Germany Michael Thursday, May 15, 2008 5:34 AM Reply | Quote 5 Sign in to vote It turns out that There are 3 Hyper-V services. 2 of them are Logon as System, and one as Network Service. When looking at the vhd, the System has full control, but Network Service doesn't. After adding Network Service -> Full Control, the VM Starts. Maybe this is more secure than All Users -> Full Control? I don't know. -Michael Quinn Saturday, May 17, 2008 6:00 PM Reply | Quote All replies 0 Sign in to vote 2 thoughts: Check the perm

Hyper-V Virtual Machine Failed to Start after Copying VHD Mark Berry October 8, 2010 On Windows Server synthetic scsi controller failed to power on with error 2008 R2 running Hyper-V, I copied a VHD to an external drive using Windows Explorer. After compacting the drive, I copied the VHD back to its original location https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/e6af62a4-4d67-4670-b60d-ebf57dfc9ec7/hyperv-vm-failed-to-start-general-access-denied-errror?forum=winserverhyperv and tried to start the virtual machine. I got a long message telling me that the virtual machine failed to start due to an access denied error. The Message Here are the important bits of the message, along with the corresponding event IDs in the Hyper-V-Worker Admin event log: ‘VM01’ failed to start. Microsoft Emulated IDE http://www.mcbsys.com/blog/2010/10/hyper-v-virtual-machine-failed-to-start-after-copying-vhd/ Controller (Instance ID {…}): failed to Power on with Error ‘General access denied error’ (0x80070005). But what is the “IDE/ATAPI Account”? I see no such account in the list of available users and groups when I try to modify the VHD file’s permissions using the GUI. What I do see, when I examine the permissions of a working VHD, is what looks like a GUID as a user name with Read and Write permissions: Virtual Machine SID It turns out that the virtual machine’s unique identifier (SID) actually needs direct access to the file. The details are in this Microsoft knowledge base article: Hyper-V virtual machines may not start, and you receive an error: “‘General access denied error’ (0x80070005)

Causes Each virtual machine is started using a virtual machine account. The virtual machine account needs read and write access to the .vhd/.vhdx file, but if the file has just been copied from somewhere general access denied then it most likely lacks the necessary file permissions. Remedy If you don't already have the Hyper-V Manager error dialog open ("An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s) ...") then try to start the virtual machine now. You need the error open. Click "See details". This will show additional details, and will look something like: 'PC-Name' failed to start. Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 server. The virtual machine didn't start and all the error was a General access denied error, like the system cannot read the vhd file. For example, consider the following error message: ‘VMName’: IDE/ATAPI Account does not have sufficient privilege to open attachment ‘E:\VMs\VMName\Disk0.vhd. Open an elevated command prompt. To give the Virtual Machine ID (SID) access to the .vhd or .avhd file, type the following command, and then press Enter: icacls
