Page 1 of 2 1 2 Next > Charlie Guest just bought Half-Life2 and tried to run it on my brandnew laptop computer (NEC PC-LR500AD, Pentium 1.4 MHz, ATI RADEON 9700). First got message that I have to update the video driver (checking on ATI's website, there http://www.valvetime.net/threads/engine-error-failed-to-lock-vertex-buffer-in-cmeshdx8-lockvertexbuffer.60382/ seems to be an update... but I cannot install it.... & NEC tells me there is no update on their side). So, this was no solution yet. When Half LIfe2 is loading, when the word 'loading' appears... it blocks/freezes and gives me following error message '"engine error : failed to lock vertex buffer in CmeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"'.... Contacting Valve technical support... they bluntly tell me that it is because I have a DVD writer on my laptop... ?"#$%&' (meaning that HL2 could not be played on most of the new laptops available now????)... what a crap.... Still looking for a solution! HL2 in the box only would not be nice ==> want to play it! Can anybody help me... as Valve seemingly cannot.... #1 Charlie, Dec 8, 2004 pieface Guest I hope someone can answer your question because I'm getting the exact same message #2 pieface, Dec 31, 2004 MrCharlie007 Guest I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with DVD/CD-R player. I have the same problem. I will post the error messages I have come up against, just for fun. In addition to the "LockVertexBuffer" error, I also got (please note my video card is an ATI Radeon 9000) "Display Driver Stopped Responding: The ati2dvag display driver has stopped working normally." AND "Engine Error- hl2.exe-Application Error: The instruction at "0x241f94b7" refere
index buffer" rather than "failed to lock vertex buffer" This seems to be happening under the same conditions as the vertex problem (almost randomly midgame), though this time I've only experienced it in Gmod. According to Steam support this happens when you alt+tab and don't have enough memory to https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=315607 render graphics or something, but the thing is I'm not alt+tabbing and I've set the heapsize to 1024000 https://steamcommunity.com/app/730/discussions/0/648814845181319451/ kb (I have 2gb RAM). I'm at a loss ad to what is causing this. Help? Reply 27th June 2007 Post #2 Herbie June 2007 122 Posts I have this problem also. Reply 4th July 2007 Post #3 JTickett July 2007 2 Posts I also have the same problem, but I get this error when launching the game. I get the load screen image, but then the error. A bit of failed to a letdown I've gotta say. I e-mailed Garry the crash logs, and a little description. If I hear anything about a solution, I'll post it here. I tried a few start up options like to use DX 7,8,9 to test those, strangely enough it gave me the exact same message for each one, like it didn't change anything. Still no response from Garry since I sent him crash logs. Reply 24th July 2007 Post #8 cyk November 2006 2 Posts I have this exact problem. I paid $10 for this, and I haven't gotten to play it at all. Reply 6th September 2007 Post #9 lunchbox1337 September 2007 3 Posts This is a problem, one that must be solved. All of us could use a solution. Edit: For me, it's "Start game...Black screen appears like its loading... game dies" Warning appears, and this didn't happen untill approximatly, 3 days ago.
