Resolved: Hyper-V General access denied error when trying to load a Virtual Hard Drive Categories: Hyper V by Juan Carlos Resolved: Hyper-V General access denied error when trying failed to open attachment hyper v the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable to load a Virtual Hard Drive Recently I was working with my

VMs and moving their storage files from one location to another. I don't recall exactly what I did hyper-v failed to change state that caused this issue but I was unable to start my VM. I would get every time the following error message: Hyper-V Manager An error occurred while attempting to start the https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2249906 selected virtual machine(s). ‘VMName' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID ‘SomeID') ‘VMName' Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller (Instance ID ‘SomeID'): Failed to Power on with Error ‘General access denied error' (0x80070005). Error: ‘General access denied error' (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID ‘SomeID') The Problem Not sure what originates this issue, but as the error message indicates Hyper-V does not have enough permissions (/sufficient priviledge) to open the attached hard drive. If I open a Virtual Machine Disk of a VM that works I can see there is an account on the Security settings tab that looks like virtual machine ID. When I go into the VHDX file for the one that is not working I can see it only has the standard accounts that are inherited by the parent folder. Clearly at some point the file permissions were lost, hence it cannot be opened. The Solution There are many things you could do at this point. The idea at the end of the day is to get that VM account the rights it needs to open the hard drive. The most tempting solution is to simply go to the security tab and add the account. Set the permissions like those of other
first time after copying (or replacing) its virtual hard drive file (.vhd or .vhdx) the virtual http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/windows/hyper-v-server/help_failed_to_start_vhdx_general_access_denied_error.htm machine fails to start with the following error: (x) An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s). 'PC-Name; failed to start. Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller (Instance ID XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX): Failed to Power on with Error 'General access denied error'. IDE/ATAPI Account does not have sufficient privilege to failed to open attachment 'E:\Hyper-V\PC-Name\Virtual Hard Disks\MyVHD.vhdx'. Error: 'General access denied error'. Where 'PC-Name' is the name of the virtual PC, the instance ID will be a unique series of letters and MyVHDX.vhdx will be the name (and path) of your own virtual hard drive file. Causes Each virtual machine is started v failed to using a virtual machine account. The virtual machine account needs read and write access to the .vhd/.vhdx file, but if the file has just been copied from somewhere then it most likely lacks the necessary file permissions. Remedy If you don't already have the Hyper-V Manager error dialog open ("An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s) ...") then try to start the virtual machine now. You need the error open. Click "See details". This will show additional details, and will look something like: 'PC-Name' failed to start.
