a minute: Sign up Jvm error -6 while starting Intellij-IDEA in 64 bit up vote 3 down vote favorite I have a problem starting Intellij IDEA (15.0.3) in 64 bit mode. When clicking on the idea6.exe I get this error (Failed failed to create jvm error code 6 webstorm to create a JVM error code -6): JVM error code 6 This is my configuration: System: Windows 7 - 64 bit - 16GB RAM System Variables: IDEA_JDK_64: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_74 JVM_HOME: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_79 (1.7 version is needed for my dev activity) vm options: idea64.exe.vmoptions left as default As a trial: I've tried various combinations like system variables pointing to the same JDK path or also to increase -Xmx value in idea64.exe.vmoptions, but the error is still there. What can the root cause failed to create jvm error code 6 android studio be? Thank you very much. java intellij-idea jvm 64bit share|improve this question edited Mar 25 at 15:46 asked Mar 25 at 15:34 nickraga87 163 have you defined both JAVA_HOME and JRE_HOME system variables? Also, if this doesn't solve your problem, try new intellij 2016.1. –nickspol Mar 25 at 19:07 Setting JRE_HOME didn't help: the same error still occured. Only upgrading to new version solved the issue. Thanks a lot for the tip ;) –nickraga87 Apr 4 at 10:10 I have exactly the same problem - and it just started this morning for some reason. Currently using IntelliJ version 2016.1.1; I tried removing the JDK and installing the latest version - no luck. Copied the JRE to the IntelliJ directory - still didn't work (the startup message shows the correct path, so it is definitely attempting to use the correct JRE). The 32-bit version works fine, it's just the 64-bit version that refuses to start. –David Apr 4 at 10:35 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote Tracked it down to a mis-typed VM option in the end. Somehow one of the lines in my idea64.exe.vmoptions file has been mis-typed. Instead of -XX:UseParNewGC I had -XX:USeParNewGC (note the unwanted extra capital letter). Correcting that fixed the problem - so check your .vmoptions file for typos if you get the -6 error on startup. And note that there may be several c

most Windows versions. Even if the maximum heap size (-Xmx) is set to just 512m, you can still observe this problem for the following reasons: Heap size is not the total memory limit, the http://stackoverflow.com/questions/36222964/jvm-error-6-while-starting-intellij-idea-in-64-bit value of -XX:PermSize is also added to this number, plus stack size for every thread, plus memory mapped files, plus internal JVM memory for the JIT compiler and other needs. All these factors make it easy to get close or exceed the 2GB value. Even if total memory doesn't exceed the OS limit, JVM requires all the heap memory to be continuous. There might be no such chunk available https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/articles/207241105-The-JVM-could-not-be-started-The-main-method-may-have-thrown-an-exception in the address space to fit in the heap. Address space fragmentation can heavily limit the maximum heap size that can be used. Your system may have a lot of different application installed and running. Some applications inject DLLs into the address space of other processes leading to fragmentation. Use the DLLs view (Ctrl+D) in the Process Explorer to find out what apps injected their hooks into the IDE process. Some common dynamic libraries that you can observe: TortoiseOverlays.dll, mdnsNSP.dll, DropboxExt.dll. The more third-party libraries you see there, the higher is the chance that the address space will get fragmented and you will get this error even with low heap values. IDE .exe launcher can itself cause additional fragmentation, we are using a third-party tool for this launcher and do not have full control over it, but in the future updates we'll migrate to our own launcher that should reduce the fragmentation. IntelliJ IDEA 13.1.x+ versions have a new launcher version that doesn't cause memory fragmentation because of the splash screen. Solutions Reduce -Xmx and -XX:PermSize values in IDE_HOME\bin\
