after Copying VHD Hyper-V Virtual Machine Failed to Start after Copying VHD Mark hyper v failed to start Berry October 8, 2010 On Windows Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V, I copied a VHD to an external drive using failed to create external configuration store Windows Explorer. After compacting the drive, I copied the VHD back to its original location and tried to start the virtual machine. I got a long message telling me that the virtual https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2249906 machine failed to start due to an access denied error. The Message Here are the important bits of the message, along with the corresponding event IDs in the Hyper-V-Worker Admin event log: ‘VM01’ failed to start. Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller (Instance ID {…}): failed to Power on with Error ‘General access denied error’ (0x80070005). [Event ID 12010] IDE/ATAPI Account does not have sufficient privilege http://www.mcbsys.com/blog/2010/10/hyper-v-virtual-machine-failed-to-start-after-copying-vhd/ to open attachment ‘D:\Virtual Machines\VM01\Virtual Hard Disks\DRIVE01.VHD’. Error: ‘General access denied error’ (0x80070005). [Event ID 12290] ‘VM01 failed to start. (Virtual machine ID 6B78D45F5-71DF-4725-B4B2-E651800BE80EF) [Event ID 12030] Okay, so I understand that it can’t access the VHD file. But what is the “IDE/ATAPI Account”? I see no such account in the list of available users and groups when I try to modify the VHD file’s permissions using the GUI. What I do see, when I examine the permissions of a working VHD, is what looks like a GUID as a user name with Read and Write permissions: Virtual Machine SID It turns out that the virtual machine’s unique identifier (SID) actually needs direct access to the file. The details are in this Microsoft knowledge base article: Hyper-V virtual machines may not start, and you receive an error: “‘General access denied error’ (0x80070005)” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2249906 Update the Permissions The solution is to give the SID Full control of the VHD using the command line. Tip: Rather than type (or mistype) the SID by hand, cut and paste it from the event log message or from the XML file name in the Virtual Machines fo
Oct. 2011] This article examines some of the more common error messages that Hyper-V administrators are likely to receive, as well http://www.virtualizationadmin.com/articles-tutorials/microsoft-hyper-v-articles/general/troubleshooting-common-hyper-v-errors-part1.html as the solutions to those errors. If you would like to read http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/windows/hyper-v-server/help_failed_to_start_vhdx_general_access_denied_error.htm the other parts in this article series please go to: Troubleshooting Common Hyper-V Errors (Part 2) Troubleshooting Common Hyper-V Errors (Part 3) Introduction Although Hyper-V generally works pretty well, errors can and sometimes do occur. That being the case, I wanted to write a short failed to article series outlining some of the more common errors that you are likely to encounter in a Hyper-V environment. As I do, I will provide you with the solutions to those errors. Memory Errors One especially common error is a memory related error indicating that there is not enough memory in the system to start the virtual machine. controller failed to You can see with this error looks like in Figure A below: Figure A: Hyper-V cannot start virtual machines and with sufficient memory is available. What this error is really saying is that you have allocated more memory to the virtual machine than what is presently available on the system. This isn't to say that the system lacks sufficient physical memory to start the virtual machine (although it may), but rather that there simply isn't enough memory currently available. Most often this error occurs when trying to start a virtual machine on a Hyper-V server when several other virtual machines are already running and have consumed the majority of the server’s memory. Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller Error Another especially common error that you are likely to encounter is a condition in which a virtual machine fails to start citing a problem with the Microsoft emulated IDE controller. You can see with this error looks like in Figure B below: Figure B: Problems with the emulated IDE controller may sometimes preve
first time after copying (or replacing) its virtual hard drive file (.vhd or .vhdx) the virtual machine fails to start with the following error: (x) An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s). 'PC-Name; failed to start. Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller (Instance ID XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX): Failed to Power on with Error 'General access denied error'. IDE/ATAPI Account does not have sufficient privilege to open attachment 'E:\Hyper-V\PC-Name\Virtual Hard Disks\MyVHD.vhdx'. Error: 'General access denied error'. Where 'PC-Name' is the name of the virtual PC, the instance ID will be a unique series of letters and MyVHDX.vhdx will be the name (and path) of your own virtual hard drive file. Causes Each virtual machine is started using a virtual machine account. The virtual machine account needs read and write access to the .vhd/.vhdx file, but if the file has just been copied from somewhere then it most likely lacks the necessary file permissions. Remedy If you don't already have the Hyper-V Manager error dialog open ("An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s) ...") then try to start the virtual machine now. You need the error open. Click "See details". This will show additional details, and will look something like: 'PC-Name' failed to start.
