In my role, I work closely with the product teams on the top problems that are reported through Microsoft support, community forums, and other listening channels. I produce a quarterly top-issue report for the product teams, and I wanted to share some common Hyper-V configuration problems that users are reporting, as well as the recommended resolutions. These problems would be useful to review for anyone planning a Hyper-V deployment or has Hyper-V running in production. Antivirus Exclusions Not Configured If antivirus software is installed on the Hyper-V server, and the real-time scanning component isn’t configured to exclude Hyper-V virtual machine (VM) files, you might experience multiple problems on the Hyper-V server. The most common problem is that the administrator opens the Hyper-V Manager console and finds that VMs are missing. Other symptoms are as follows: VM performance problems Creating or starting a VM fails with one of the following error messages: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8) VMName’ Microsoft Synthetic Ethernet Port (Instance ID{7E0DA81A-A7B4-4DFD-869F-37002C36D816}): Failed to Power On with Error 'The specified network resource or device is no longer available.' The issue was exasterbated by the fact the drive holding the VM's had run out of space and http://windowsitpro.com/windows/common-hyper-v-configuration-problems they where all "saved" and offline. In any case after lots of investigating and attempting to fix the VM's (after freeing space) I still couldn't create or edit existing VM's! The message poping up was something like this The server encountered an error while configuring network on ----- Failed to add device ‘Microsoft Synthetic Ethernet Port'. So the fix, at least for me, was Antivirus exclusions! The box in this case was http://www.techhelpblog.com/2011/04/06/hyper-failed-add-device-microsoft-synthetic-ethernet-port/ running AVG enterprise and by adding an exclusion on the virtual machine directory the problem seen above went away, I have since heard of similar issues with other AV apps and also MS Forefront causing the same issues. Hope this helps About Josh Just a Techie View all posts by Josh → ← Exchange 2010 and blank OWA screen after install REPLMON with Server 2008 Server. another – the Live Migration was failing to bring the VM online to the new host and http://www.remilner.co.uk/hyper-v-live-migration-failing-with-microsoft-synthetic-ethernet-port-failed-to-power-on/ it was also bringing up the following error in Event Viewer: 'Virtual Machine TEST' failed to start. After a bit of reading, it was due to adding the Network Card to the VM by using the Hyper-V Manager. Because the VM is cluster aware, you have to refresh the Virtual Machine configuration within Failover Cluster Manager in order for the configuration to be updated for microsoft synthetic ethernet use for all nodes. After reading the Microsoft documentation, it is best practice to update any VM settings from the Failover Cluster Manager. As per the Microsoft KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2592237 This issue can occur if a network adapter is added or removed on a highly available virtual machine using the Hyper-V Manager console. The Hyper-V Manager console is not cluster aware which means that configuration changes that are made to virtual networks or virtual machines in the Hyper-V Manager console must be replicated to the other cluster nodes by using the “refresh virtual machine configuration” option in the Failover Cluster Manager console. If the “refresh virtual machine configuration” option is not used, the virtual machine will either fail to migrate or the virtual machine settings (VLAN ID, Memory, etc.) that were changed will be lost when the virtual machine is migrated to another Hyper-V cluster node. How to refresh the configuration of a virtual machine: 1. In the Failover Cluster Manager console, expand Services and Applic
Settings Situation: We have Windows 2008 R2 running Hyper-V with two Virtual machines. After we re-did Virtual Network, we can't start those Virtual machines with this error: "An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machines". Fixed: The client has removed the original Virtual Network Connection and re-created a new one. If we open the Settings on the Virtual Machine, we see Ethernet Port Configuration Error. We fixed it by clicking on the Ethernet Port Configuration Error and select the new created virtual network as shown below.
