Environment Oracle 11gR2 RAC Diagnosing the problem If SQLPlus is used to start the http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21608546 database, then it will successfully load the library. Also, if the database is set to stand-alone mode, the Data Protection for Oracle library can be loaded. The problem to load the library is only seen when the Oracle grid software is used to startup the Oracle database in cluster mode. Resolving the problem The issue is that the Oracle grid needs to know the Library paths, such that it can search for and load the necessary library files from these related paths. As mentioned in the Oracle Metalink document 1439674.1, you would want to set the paths in the grid for example: srvctl setenv database -d dbname -t "PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/dbhome_1/lib, LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/dbhome_1/lib, LIBPATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/dbhome_1/lib:/usr/lib/libobk.a, SHLIB_PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/dbhome_1/lib:/usr/lib/libobk.a" Please note that it is necessary to bounce/restart the database via srvctl even though this extra step is not stated within the Metalink document. This should allow the database to be started/controlled by the Oracle grid and allow the backups to work successfully with the Data Protection for Oracle library interface. ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name: failed to My system: Simpana 9 Host: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 3) 2.6.9 34.ELsmp (64-bit) Oracle:10.1.0.5.0 I've reinstalled the client making sure I entered the proper oracle group (tried both oinstall and dba) I've ran the cvpkgchg script and gave read, write, execute privs to the other users on the system. I still failed to load can't get past that error. I've had success with every other linux system (same version). The only difference I can see is that my other oracle databases are 10.2.0.2.0 or higher. Anything else I can try.
