What do you want autoselected keyboard map en-us error: failed to open display: to access that way? Sorry, that makes no sense... You could either login with ssh or similar to get access on CLI level or you could try to fire an application on the remote system and have it connect to your local X server by means of X11 forwarding. But the rdesktop protocol is to forward a remote graphical desktop which clearly does not exist in your case. –arkascha Dec 4 '15 at 14:52 maybe you could explain what you are actually trying to achieve, maybe you are on the wrong path with rdp –OznOg Dec 4 '15 at 16:13 only send rdp request, another it manager said it's only that he need –user3378254 Dec 5 '15 at 15:06 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote accepted Yes, you have several options: Use a client that render over framebuffer, for instance (FreeRDP)[http://http://www.freerdp.com/] Install a X-Server on your desktop machine, for Windows do you have [XMing] (http://www.straightrunning.com/xmingnotes/). To redirect your X you must define DISPLAY=

Check this by doing a ssh user@localhost xterm –Dave C Mar 8 '13 at 11:35 Thanks. I tried that and the error does not show but then neither does the rdesktop interface? It just shows the cursor in the terminal? –Gizmo_the_Great Mar 9 '13 at 12:14 add a comment| active oldest votes Know someone who can answer? Now, I failed to open don't understand why I can't run GUI apps from a terminal when running as root. For example: sudo -i glxgears Generates the following output: No protocol specified Error: couldn't open display :0 But when I first open the terminal I can run glxgears from the user account. Its only after I do sudo -i that the problem crops up. This happens for any GUI app that I try to run. I think its probably related to X11, but I'm not sure. debian x11 kde gui share|improve this question asked Mar 9 '14 at 7:31 Octopus 5583820 stackoverflow.com/a/20612084 this worked perfectly for me. –user88494 Oct 20 '14 at 9:42 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 16 down vote accepted Accessing the X server requires two things: The $DISPLAY variable pointing to the correct display (usually :0) Proper authentication information The authentication information can be explicitly specified via $XAUTHORITY, and defaults to ~/.Xauthority otherwise. a lot lately and I've been very displeased because the arrow keys, as well as del/ins/home/end/pgup/pgdown don't work. Of course, I've been too busy to even bother looking into it until today, although I wish I would've sooner. A simple little strace rdesktop-vrdp hostname 2> output.txt showed the following: open("/home/user/.rdesktop/keymaps/en-us", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/opt/VirtualBox/rdesktop-vrdp-keymaps/en-us", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("keymaps/en-us", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/home/user/.rdesktop/keymaps/en", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/opt/VirtualBox/rdesktop-vrdp-keymaps/en", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("keymaps/en", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) The keymaps are all stored in /usr/share/virtualbox/rdesktop-vrdp-keymaps/ though, which this doesn't seem to be looking in. Why? Not sure for now, but I'll probably look into the why a little later. My quick solution was this: mkdir -p ~/.rdesktop/keymaps/ ln -s /usr/share/virtualbox/rdesktop-vrdp-keymaps ~/.rdesktop/keymaps And that's all there is to it! ‹ Running Scripts Using NetworkManager Triple Head with nVidia Optimus on Fedora 21 (includes Docking udev Rules for Systemd) › 4 thoughts on “Resolving the infamous rdesktop error: failed to open keymap en-us” Graham Pooler says: July 8, 2014 at 4:08 AM Many thanks for this. A simpler solution is: mkdir -p ~/.rdesktop ln -s /usr/share/virtualbox/rdesktop-vrdp-keymaps ~/.rdesktop/keymaps Uses less space and has the advantages that any map updates will be automatically available. Thanks for the correction, Graham!
