vote favorite I am getting a General protection error while I run a binary. But there is no core dump. How do I debug the problem ? Is this the problem with the "ld" i am using ? kernel: testbin[24879] general protection ip:7fd7271585e0 sp:7fff1ef55070 error:0 in ld-2.14.so[7fd727142000+20000] linux interrupt share|improve this question asked Feb 28 '13 at 18:10 mnpria 715 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest linux general protection error 0 votes up vote 1 down vote Before debugging, re-compile your program with debugging symbols (-g option), else you wont have enough detail information to effectively and quickly debug it (like filename, function, line). There are more programs for debugging programs but for now I will suggest you valgrind. So run your program through valgrind: valgrind /path/to/your/program and then reproduce steps to cause your program to General Protection Fault. If the software isnt yours, you'll have to contact the author and get support. share|improve this answer answered Feb 28 '13 at 18:27 Zaffy 8,93442662 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. (May 2011) (Learn how and when to remove this template message) A general protection fault (GPF) in the Intel x86 and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15142590/general-protection-error-on-linux-based-os AMD x86-64 types of computer microprocessor architectures, and other unrelated architectures, is a fault (a type of interrupt) that can encompass several cases in which protection mechanisms within the processor architecture are violated by any of the programs that are running, either the kernel or a user program. The mechanism is first described in section 9.8.13 in the Intel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_protection_fault 80386 programmer's reference manual from 1986. A general protection fault is implemented as an interrupt (vector number 13 in decimal) in both the x86 and the AMD64 architectures. If the processor detects a protection violation, it stops executing the code and sends a GPF interrupt. In most cases the operating system removes the failing process from the execution queue, signals the user, and continues executing other processes. If, however, the operating system fails to catch the general protection fault, i.e. another protection violation occurs before the operating system returns from the previous GPF interrupt, the processor signals a double fault, stopping the operating system. If yet another failure (triple fault) occurs, the processor stops working and only responds to a reset.
