How http://askubuntu.com/questions/654386/windows-10-upgrade-lead-into-grub-rescue exciting! I got the update, and it was installing, and I left to go take a 30 minute nap. However, when I came back to my computer, it led me to the grub rescue prompt. error: no such partition. Entering rescue mode... grub rescue> I get the following when I type ls: grub rescue> ls (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) After a quick look through of people who encountered the grub rescue prompt, I typed set and got the following grub rescue> set cmdpath=(hd0) prefix=(hd0,msdos6)/boot/grub root=hd0,msdos6 I was still kind of lost after finding that certain commands like normal didn't work, and then I found a video tutorial where you boot from a Linux image cd and run some commands on the terminal. Luckily, I had my CD with me, and booted from there. When I typed sudo fdisk -l into the terminal however, this is what I got: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders, total 1953525168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 byt

Join Date Aug 2009 Location Vienna Beans 46 DistroUbuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx HARD DISK ERROR while booting Hi, I just bought a Notebook HP Pavilion dv6 with Windows 7 on it. First grub hard disk thing I did was to format the entire HDD, I created 3 partition; 1 for Windows, 1 for Kubuntu 11.10 and 1 for data. After a while I started to get "HARD DISK ERROR" messages on startup. The message was obviously generated by BIOS. So, I thought it has nothing to do with the OS. I took it back to the shop where I bought it and they send it to HP for replacing the HDD. After 2 weeks I picked it up and they just replaced the RAM memories, updated the BIOS and re-installed Windows 7. But they did not change the HDD. They said there´s nothing wrong with the HDD. I Installed Kubuntu 11.10, single boot, and I am still getting the "HARD DISK ERROR" from the BIOS before Kubuntu even starts loading. This happens 4 times out of 10. Could it be possible that Kubuntu causes the porblem? Does anybody else have that problem? I would take it back to the shop, they would re-install Windows 7 and wunna replace the HDD again... So, what to do? Thanks a lot in advance Adv Reply December 27th, 2011 #2 xyzzyman View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message Skinny Soy Caramel Ubuntu Join Date Oct 2005 Location Syracuse, NY Beans 659 DistroUbuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Re: HARD DISK ERROR while booting Originally Posted by marcellux Hi, I just bought a

Just some questions: You say you installed linux on "F:". Does that mean that you can see F: in windows with all linux files? In that case you installed it with the wrong filesystem, which seriously impares functionality and performance. (The reason you shouldn't be able to see it in windows is that windows is unable to read ext2, the file system that linux normally uses) Exactly what error does GRUB give you and when? Is it when GRUB starts or is it when you try a
