It's a big black heavy beast (40kg) of a server. I use it for 3D graphics (running Linux, and mainly with Blender although I also have Maya). http://askubuntu.com/questions/143667/boot-error-no-such-device-grub-rescue The machine was originally used in the making of Lord of the Rings. Anyway, it now hosts Ubuntu Linux 7.04 (I'm wanting to upgrade to 7.10 once I free up some HD space) though there's always been grub hard a problem with it... ...I have to use a floppy to boot the thing. The floppy contains "smart boot loader" and I simply tell it to "boot from hard drive" once the floppy had started. If I try booting from the hard drive without the floppy, I only ever get "Grub Hard Disk Error" at the top of the screen. Nothing in the LXF100 Boot up problems special seems to help here. Looks like grub hard disk it's halting with the error at the 1.5 boot stage, does not make it up to the menu.lst stuff. I don't understand why it boots from the floppy to the hard drive no problem but not directly from the HD. Some website forums have suggested flashing the BIOS to fix this error, although I would hate to trash my system trying that kind of thing. Any ideas? The bootdisk I mentioned is "smart boot manager" which has featured on LXF many times (and if I'm not mistaken now comes with every LXF DVD under essentials/SBM). There is an option to load this onto the harddrive so that it becomes the default bootloader, though attempts to do this have resulted in a loop where it loads itself and waits for me to select har

I can't access my Windows 7 partition either I get the message: > error: no such device: 58ABF29C... grub rescue> I suppose my master boot record got erased/corrupted. How can I check and fix this? installation grub2 share|improve this question asked May 29 '12 at 12:43 andandandand 5444716 marked as duplicate by Eliah Kagan, con-f-use, RolandiXor♦ Mar 19 '13 at 17:50 This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question. If your MBR were erased, GRUB would not run at all. What is happening here is that the MBR code is running, and has been told to look on the partition with the UUID of 58abf29c... for the configuration menu. Most likely, this was the partition you erased, so it doesn't exist anymore. The easiest way to fix it would be to download the grub boot repair CD, which will probably fix it automatically. –Marty Fried May 29 '12 at 16:22 A complete answer is here askubuntu.com/questions/125428/… –Bryce Nov 11 '13 at 17:58 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 14 down vote accepted Re-install your GRUB. Boot using a live cd of ubuntu. Open a terminal and run the command sudo fdisk -l It lists the complete partition table of the hard disk. In there, identify which partition you have got your linux installed on. You can identify it using the drive size you had allocated for it and looking at the last column of the output which will be ex
