with both address entry as well as using a built in POI. Another scenario how to update gps maps for free involves people winding up on closed or private roads. So how do you get an error corrected on a GPS device? gps errors and corrections Determine the Source First, you need to determine which product contains the error. By knowing which product contains the error you can report the issue to the proper mapping company. Thankfully, while there are https://my.garmin.com/mapErrors/report.faces a handful of GPS companies and online mapping tools, there are only two mapping companies. So ask which GPS company their device is from, or which online mapping service they are using. Then, you can determine which mapping company to report the error to. Here is a table showing who currently uses which mapping provider- but keep in mind these sometimes change. NAVTEQ Tele Atlas Garmin ✔ Magellan http://www.gpsreview.net/how-to-correct-a-gps-map-error/ ✔* ✔* MapQuest ✔ Mio ✔ MSN/Bing Maps ✔ Navigon ✔ TomTom ✔ Yahoo Maps ✔ Google Update In the USA, Google is now using a combination of the USGS/Tiger data along with data they have collected themselves. They are now accepting corrections directly. They still use other vendors such as Tele Atlas in other areas of the world. Unfortunately, corrections they cannot verify from their desks though aerial imagery or their street view imagery are mostly coming back with "sorry, we can't correct that type of issue" messages. The quality of their maps has seriously declined as a result of their change. Most of the online mapping services will contain a copyright notice with the name of the mapping company they used. Note that the table above refers to maps in North America, other countries could vary. Report the Error Once you've identified the source of the error you can report it to the proper mapping company. For Navteq issues, report it to mapreporter.navteq.com. Tele Atlas issues can be reported to mapinsight.teleatlas.com. They provide forms you can fill out to describe the issue in detail and submit a report. For people who have more recent TomTom GPS devices, they also have a
to know how to actually notify Garmin of a route problem? There is a main road near my home that will not be used when I https://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/4440.html do a route home. I've tried all settings. It just won't recognize the road https://www.livgov.com/gis/pages/errormap.aspx unless there is absolutely no other way to get to a location. johmazz2006 GPS: Garmin Nuvi 765, Garmin 3950LMT, Garmin 2455LMT, Navman40, Garmin StreetPilot 3 Back to top | Link Route problem Garmin use maps which are updated yearly, or every 4 months if you have lifetime updates paid for. Red Guest Back to top how to | Link Error reporting My impression is that Garmin forwards this stuff back to map makers, but as a user you get nothing for reporting it. Real cartographers always (ALWAYS) would sned you back a free update of your paper map next time they published one, as a courtesy for reporting errors to them. Garmin? Misses the point. One free update is a damned cheap way to get map errors how to correct reported by users. In some locations, the base information is simply poor. In others (are you sitting down?) map makers place INTENTIONAL errors in their maps, so they can easily tell if someone has copied them. If your route takes a back road or a little-used one, that's usually where they put in intentional errors. And Garmin wouldn't know if that was the problem, only their vendor would. (i.e. NavTeq, who don't follow the old courtesies either.) johmazz2006 GPS: Garmin Nuvi 765, Garmin 3950LMT, Garmin 2455LMT, Navman40, Garmin StreetPilot 3 Back to top | Link Re: Error reporting Red wrote: In others (are you sitting down?) map makers place INTENTIONAL errors in their maps, so they can easily tell if someone has copied them. Pretty big statement, any proof ?? I have found MANY times that where new roads are being built, that there is occasionally a "dotted" track where new road is going, but you are not able to use the road on the gps when completed, UNTIL the maps are upgraded. The 4 lifetime upgrades per year from Garmin go a long way to improving that situation, much better than a yearly update. Red Guest Back to top | Link Do your own homework "Pretty big
