I have never install using grub-install since I usually use grub command prompt with root and setup.Further searching indicate I can copy my laptop MBR to the external /sbin/grub not found hard disk using dd command. However, the partition table is not the same and I try copying the MBR to another external hard disk it result in "Missing operating system".I hope fellow ArchLinux can advise how me to make my 1TB external hard disk bootable again. but check out this site: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual … ge2-errors"5 : Partition table invalid or corruptThis error is returned if the sanity checks on the integrity of the partition table fail. This is a bad sign. "This may or may not help, some people have reported it helping:can you boot a LiveCD and rearrange the boot partition to be in the begining? also check that the disk has a bottable flag on it with fdisk -lto find what it's called then fdisk /dev/whatyoufound/a (toggle bootable flag)1 (1st partition)w (write the partition table)In general Grub error 5 seems to be pretty serious, and I would say backup your /home and settings and reinstall, unless someone has a better idea...note: I can't be responsible for ANY data loss, please take my advice as a recommendation. Maybe the last kernel update cause my partition not to be recognize. I was using kubuntu with kde4.1 but decided to change back to ubuntu as there were too many niggly things i didnt like about kde4.1. I had my home directory on a separate partition and thought that installing ubuntu wouldnt be really a problem and i could then just mount the same partition and i would still have all my files. I put in the 8.04 live CD and went into the installer. I said to format the kubuntu partition and use the other partition as home with my files in but i didnt format it. Maybe I shouldnt have done that? The installation failed. I cannot remember why now as I got distracted by my gf nagging and just cancelled the install. I thought I had just set up the install wrong and it hadnt started and i would come back to it later. When I went to boot my laptop i get that it is starting Grub 1.5 and then "error 5". I looked this up in the manual and it sa

It contains two unpartitioned disks (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb). I'd like to be able to boot from either disk. But grub won't let me do this, since it can't see a partition on either disk. I'm afraid I've rendered this system unbootable (and I don't want to reboot to find out). Any ideas on how to get out of this? I'm happy to break the raid to make that happen, if necessary. To be more specific, running grub-install /dev/sd[a,b] leads to: Unknown partition table signature (this repeats 10 times) The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly. And running grub directly and then saying "root (hd0,0)" or "root (hd1,0)" leads to: Error 5: Partition table invalid or corrupt partitioning grub software-raid rhel-6 share|improve this question edited Nov 2 '11 at 16:22 asked Nov 2 '11 at 16:10 clu 11 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote I don't think GRUB will work without a partition table. If you don't mind losing the data, just repartition the drives and start over. I find it useful to make "whole disk" partitions for RAID members slightly smaller than the drive size because all drives sold as a given size are NOT identical in terms of number of sectors. If you forfeit a cylinder or two on the end, you'll be more likely to be able to replace a drive and re-add a replacement when the time comes. share|improve this answer answered Nov 2 '11 at 16:28 kbyrd 1,7691632 I do mind losing the data! Well, it's more that it takes time to get a system manually deployed (setting up iptables, networking, etc.) and I'd rather not have to do that. Is there any way I can save this system? Can I remove both drives from the raid, fix their partition tables, and re-add them? mdadm won't let me remove both, but I'm wondering if there's some way to force it to let me. –clu Nov 2 '11 at 16:42 Yes, see my
