not have any corresponding BIOS drive". I have never install using grub-install since I usually use grub command prompt with root and setup.Further searching indicate I can copy my laptop MBR to the external hard disk using dd command. However, the partition table is not the same and I try copying the MBR to how to corrupt grub in linux another external hard disk it result in "Missing operating system".I hope fellow ArchLinux can advise how me to make my 1TB external hard disk bootable again. This is a bad sign. "This may or may not help, some people have reported it helping:can you boot a LiveCD and rearrange the boot partition to be in the begining? also check that the disk has a bottable flag on it with fdisk -lto find what it's called then fdisk /dev/whatyoufound/a (toggle bootable flag)1 (1st partition)w (write the partition table)In general Grub error 5 seems to be pretty serious, and I would say backup your /home and settings and reinstall, unless

hdhiman Member Registered: 2012-08-27 Posts: 2 (Fresh Install) Grub Error 5 : Partition table invalid or corrupt Dear all,I tried to install ArchBang yesterday, twice, and it ended in error both times. Here's my HDD Setup. All http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=3296 3 disks are brand new./dev/sda : SSD (Unused, raw)/dev/sdb : HDD /dev/sdb1 : Boot : / : ext4 /dev/sdb5 : -- : /home : ext4 /dev/sdb6 : http://www.uruk.org/orig-grub/errors.html -- : swap/dev/sdc : HDD (Unused, raw) Grub is installed in sdb. The install goes successfully. On boot, I get this:root (hd1,0)Grub Error 5 : Partition table invalid or corruptThe Bios is set to boot how to from DVD Drive, followed by second HDD (sdb). I'm not sure what is the problem. Is it because my first disk is empty? Thanks! And to check if your home partition is well defined in the installation. In this way also the mbr of sdb can be fixed if there is some error with that. But another question and possible solution is why not make sdb sda?Why did you choose for quite illogical procedure? So the partitions are present. However, I realized that my motherboard is pretty new, and uses UEFI. Do you think that might be contributing to the issue? error string and then halt. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 1: "Hard Disk Error" This error message will occur if the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is being read from a hard disk, and the attempt to determine the size and geometry of the hard disk fails. "Floppy Error" This error message will occur if the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is being read from a floppy disk, and the attempt to determine the size and geometry of the floppy disk fails. It's listed as a different error since the probe sequence is different than for hard disks. "Read Error" This error message will occur if a disk read error happens while trying to read the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5. "Geom Error" This error message will occur if the location of the Stage 2 or Stage 1.5 is not in the area supported by reading the disk with the BIOS directly. This could occur because the BIOS translated geometry has been changed by the user or the disk is moved to another machine or controller after installation, or GRUB was not installed using itself (if it was, the Stage 2 version of this error would have been seen during that process and it would not have completed the install). Errors Reported by the Stage 1.5 The general way that the Stage 1.5 handles errors is to print an error number in the form "Error: " and then halt. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del will reboot. The error numbers correspond to the Errors Reported by the Stage 2 in the listed sequence. Errors Reported by the Stage 2 The general way that the Stage 2 handles errors is to abort the operation in question, print an error string, then (if possible) either continue based on the fact that an error occurred or wait for the user to deal with the error. The following is a comprehensive list of error messages for the Stage 2 (error numbers for the Stage 1.5 are listed before the colon in each description): 1 : "Selected item won't fit into memory" This error is returned if a kernel, module, or raw file load command is either trying to load it's data such that it won't fit into memory or it is simply too big. 2 : "Selected disk doesn't exist" This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full filename refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not pre
