How To Fix Access Denied Error When Using Msconfig
disable a program from starting up by using the MSCONFIG - System Configuration Utility, I received an error stating: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administratoraccount to make the specified changes" Unfortunately, this error happens even using an account with Administrator priviledges, and the error doesn't give enough information to let you know which service is causing the problem. After an hour or more of trial and error, I traced the problem to an update for his HP printer software. The HP software loads a service called PML Driver HPZ12 into the Services section that loads automatically. This service is used by many HP printers including the HP PSC 2100, 2200, 4100, and 6100 series of All-in-One printers, the Deskjet 6600 and 6800 series, the PhotoSmart series, and All-in-One OfficeJet printers. Trying to disable this service in Computer Management, however, was not the answer. It would not allow me to change the Startup type from Automatic to either Manual or Disabled. It appears the PML Driver HPZ12 service handles non-printing related two-way communications between the PC and the HP printer. These tasks would include things like low ink level information, and on All-in-One HP devices it would include scanning options and such between the printer and the computer. So, although you probably don't want to disable it, setting it to manual would solve the MSCONFIG error and still allow you to scan and accomplish other tasks with the printer. Now, however, is the tricky part...HOW to set the service to disabled, manual, or automatic. It seems HP has decided that the only way you can change the properties or Startup Type of the PML Driver HPZ12 service is by editing the registry. So, follow the steps below to change this service if you want, however be carefully when editing the registry. Click on Start, Run Type REGEDIT and Press Enter or Click OK Click on the Pluses (+) next to the following items in the left column of the Registry Editor HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE System CurrentControlSet Services PML Driver HPZ12 In the
