Solved CD-ROM Problem -- CDR101: Not Ready Reading drive D Posted on 2002-10-23 MS DOS 1 Verified Solution 13 Comments 4,983 Views Last Modified: 2007-11-27 I have an old NEC Powermate P2166 with a pentium 166 mhz 2 gig HD. I tried to install windows 98 after formating and erasing win 95. I did everything right--I even created a bootdisk. When I start my computer with the boot disk it recongizes all my devices (even my cdrom drive), but when I try to access my cdrom, I keep getting this error: CDR101: Not ready reading drive D Abort, Retry, Fail? It doesn't even attempt to read the cdrom (the light doesn't come on and it doesn't spin up). I've tried everything. I'm reinstalling windows for the second time in two weeks and didn't have this problem the first time. The cdrom isn't bad either, because I've tested that in another machine. Did you try any other disks in the drive? Have you tried accessing other drive letters as the CDROM drive? It may be that the boot disk you're using creates a Ram drive, in which case MSCDEX assigns a subsequent drive letter. Try reading it as the E: drive...

If you did this then make certain that when given the three options you choose Boot with CD-Rom support Assuming you arrive at the A:/> prompt safely you can then move to the C prompt by typing CD C: and hiting enter. From there type MKDIR WINCABS and hit enter You will now have a new folder C:\WINCABS Now type CD E:\WIN98 and hit enter. Note: What ever the letter normally assigned to your CD drive is, it will be one letter higher now because the boot disk borrows the usual assigne

Did you upgrade a cdrom to a cd writer/dvd player since then? I had a problem similar to this one where it wouldn't recognize my cd writer so i took it out and put my original cdrom back in for the install which worked fine then replaced it with the cd writer once windows was up

Check the bios setup to see if the cd is reported. Laptops with external cd's require specialty dos drivers on the rescue disk to be recognized. Check the cd cables make sure they are connected. Try another cd G.F. Last edited by General Failure; January 30th, 2002 at 04:15 PM. If so you can not acess the cdrom drive without drivers for the cd. Use a Win98 machine, go to the control panel, add/remove programs, and click the start up disk tab and click create disk. Use this disk to boot the blank computer. You will get three options, you can pick run windows setup from cd. It will find a universal driver to enable the cd drive Reply Reply With Quote January 30th, 2002,04:53 PM #4 Guest In some cases A win 95b disk gives you better selection of options and sometimes better drivers - Some old junk I have needed the orig drivers - some worked on 95 and a few worked 98. wiz Reply Reply With Quote January 30th, 2002,08:05 PM #5 Makaveli View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries Ultimate Member Join Date Oct 2001 Location USA, Maine Posts 1,356 I have already used the bootdisk I have created at bootdisk.com. That is the only reason I am as far as I am now, without the bootdisk I can't even get anywhere but BIOS settings. When in the command and i type E:, it brings me to that directory. When at E: I ty
