ProductsHomearound the homeproductivityHow to Bypass the Pointing Device Error 8603 in the BIOSHow to Bypass the Pointing Device Error 8603 in the BIOSBy Kristopher RiggsThe Basic Input Output System (BIOS) on a computer is basic software used to ensure the components work together. Errors typically occur in the BIOS to warn you of potentially serious problems with the hardware. Occasionally these errors can be bypassed. An 8603 error indicates a pointing device connection issue and can be disabled when the mouse still works. Even if you have no computer experience, you can fix this error.Step 1Power off the computer by clicking "Start" and "Shut Down." Allow the computer to stay off for 10 seconds. Reboot the computer. Wait for the BIOS to prompt you to enter the setup. Press the necessary key required to enter setup, typically "F1," "F12" or "Delete."Step 2Enter BIOS and search for "PS-2 Mouse Port" or an equivalent title. Switch this setting to "Disable." Press the appropriate key to save the changes. Restart the computer, and allow it to boot back into Windows.Step 3Log in to the Windows system. Click "Start" and "Programs," and search for "Windows Update." Check to see if any critical updates are available. Install those that are available, and restart when prompted. Reboot the computer, and ensure that the BIOS no longer prompts for continuation due to an 8603 error.Tips & WarningsAn 8603 error is caused when the BIOS does not sense a mouse connected to the PS/2 port. By disabling this port, the computer is forced to recognize the mouse connected via USB. It is important to run Windows Update after disabling the PS/2 port to download the newest mouse drivers for the USB port.References & ResourcesPCPR: How to Fix Error Codes: Error 8603Bios Central: IBM Diagnostic CodesRelatedGrandpa Needs a New Cell PhoneProductivityW

It had viruses...7 viruses to be exact. I tried deleting all the registry keys, installing and running Norton but how to fix everything I undone the virii put back even after Norton wiped out 52 infected files. It was the adware virii. Anyways, I bring the computer back to my house to take care of this problem, I plug it in boot it up and the first thing it tells me is 8603 Pointing device error. And yes there's a mouse plugged in. I try to continue and exit setup and it comes up 1962 no operating system found. This computer was just running at the person's house and I get it home and it won't work. It won't even boot with a floppy in it! None of the cables have been unhooked, and nothing else out of the ordinary either. It's like it doesn't want me to fix it..lol I don't think the virus could have done this, it was only an adware virus, Adware.ADTOMI + other; favoriteman, clearsearch..etc..... This system is a P2 350, 128mb ram 4g hd win98 Just when you think you've seen it all. Reply With Quote April 18th, 2004,07:55 PM #2 Nick Grana View Profile View Forum Posts Virtual PC Specialist!!!
