If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question. If your MBR were erased, GRUB would not run at all. What is happening here is that the MBR code is running, and has been told to look on the partition with the UUID of 58abf29c... for the configuration menu. Most likely, this was the partition you erased, so it doesn't exist anymore. The easiest way to fix it would be to download the grub boot repair CD, which will probably fix it automatically. –Marty Fried May 29 '12 at 16:22 A complete answer is here askubuntu.com/questions/125428/… –Bryce Nov 11 '13 at 17:58 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 14 down vote accepted Re-install your GRUB. So I made a LiveUSB with Ubuntu 12.04 on and installed it to the external hard drive. I then deleted the partition and re-formatted the external hard drive that had Ubuntu on. When I go to turn on my laptop now (with the Windows 7 hard drive) I get this. error: no such device: c74908d5-9525-4fdc-a89a-cfa380052200. Entering rescue mode... http://askubuntu.com/questions/520953/error-no-such-device-grub-rescue-windows-7 grub rescue> ls (hd0) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) grub rescue> I do not have the original disk that contained the Windows 7 OS on, I have seen from other forums that this can be used to repair the boot loader for windows. So obviously I am in a sticky situation. I have another external hard drive with Ubuntu 14.04 on and when I connect an external hard drive case with the Windows 7 hard drive on. I can access these folders from Ubuntu 14.04. System: Windows: If anyone has any help as to how I can fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. boot 14.04 windows-7 grubrescue share|improve this question edited Sep 7 '14 at 6:42 Eliah Kagan 56.1k15162255 asked Sep 6 '14 at 20:22 Callum Osborn 613 Hope it helps! linux.com/learn/tutorials/… –saptarshi nag Sep 7 '14 at 7:03 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote If you don't have a Windows repair/recovery disc (which can be used to fix the bootloader), and don't have a copy of Ubuntu or some other Linux installed elsewhere (which can also be used to fix the bootloader), you may boot from a LiveCD of Ubuntu and then move the bootloader to Windows: sudo apt-get install lilo sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr To check which disk (e.g. /dev/sda) contains your Windows partition, use the Disks application available on the LiveCD. share|im

Now I cannot boot any operating system anymore, unfortunately. When trying to boot, the following error message appears on my display: error: no such device: c4d250ab-b08f-4a9a-84b9-344d9ea61e03. grub rescue> The following steps led to this problem: 1) First try with wubi - I made a new partition of 100MB, using the Windows 7 system tools. I gave this partition the name U: and restarted the computer twice - I then downloaded Wubi from ubuntu.com/download and tried to install ubuntu 11.04 on this new partition U: - Installing worked well, but after rebooting an error message appeared (after ubuntu sucessfully booted) and told me "no root file system is defined". When I clicked on "okay", the message just appeared again and did not let me continue. - Thus I un-installed ubuntu 11.04 again in Windows 7 (using the Windows 7

The problem I'm having is simply that right after install, everything went fine on install, I reboot, and I cannot get past Grub. I have reinstalled the whole base system twice. Still the same error:error: no such device: 8f2e32e6-7d21-4f4d-8661-6f1ec6e658eeGrub Rescue>Edit: I just noticed that the UUID grub is giving me does not match any of my partitions...It just leaves me at that.I have two hard drives. One is a brand spankin' new SSD that I know works perfectly fine (I test installed Ubuntu on it to be sure), the other the regurlar old hard drive that came with the computer many years ago. sda is the hard drivesdb is the SSDI have the SSD with swap and / on it in two partitionsthe hard drive is /homeBecause of the inherent speed increase on my SSD and the fact that /boot is on there, I decided to install Grub on sdb. The installer offered the following options:sdasda1sdb -->I hit enter to install Grub here, because I read that you have to install it to the MBR and not a partition.sdb1sdb5Because of the inconsistent naming by Linux and Grub, I set Grub to boot by UUID, so that kernel updates cannot change the drive naming.(Hence the UUID error)Here is my /etc/fstab # # /etc/fstab: static file system information # #
