Windows Blue Screen Errors 06 May 2010Troubleshooting Windows Blue Screen ErrorsThe so-called 'Blue Screen of Death' has inspired fear in the hearts of mere mortals, but Systems Administrators are expected be capable of casually beating back this sinister beast. So imagine Ben Lye's distress when he discovered that many aspiring SysAdmins had no structured approach to tackling the root of the problem. Setting out to remedy the situation, Ben lays out a simple 3-step plan, and dispenses some good advice. 137 4 Ben Lye Over the past few months I've been interviewing candidates for systems administration jobs, and one of the questions I like to ask is about troubleshooting blue screen error messages. I try to find out what https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3106831 kind of approach the person takes when confronted with the dreaded blue-screen, and the answers I've had have surprised me, and not always pleasantly. Many of the candidates didn't have a methodical approach, and more often than I would've liked, the first steps they say they would take would be to reinstall or re-image the system, or to replace the memory. Now don't get me wrong, reinstalling the OS or replacing the memory may solve some blue-screen-causing issues, but they https://www.simple-talk.com/sysadmin/general/troubleshooting-windows-blue-screen-errors/ shouldn't be the first troubleshooting steps taken. It is displayed when the Windows kernel or a driver running in kernel mode encounters an error which cannot be handled. This error could be something like a process or driver trying to access a memory address which it did not have permission to access, or trying to write to a section of memory which is marked read-only. More to the point, Stop messages don't occur without a reason; they are an indication that the system has a problem somewhere - hardware, software, or device drivers can all be the cause of the fault. Often a simple reboot will get the system up and running again, but if the underlying problem is not solved, the blue screen will probably come back again. The aim of this article is to offer a methodical approach to troubleshooting stop messages, with a few simple steps which can take a lot of the guesswork out, and could get your system back up and running more quickly and easily than reinstalling the operating system. Step 1 - Read the message It may sound obvious, but the first step is simply to read the message displayed on screen. Often there is enough inform

The content from memory is written to the Pagefile as the system is going down. It uses the Pagefile as placeholder for the data since it is too dangerous to try to create a new file on disk. When the machine starts up again it'll detect the dump, and move the data into a separate dump file (typically C:\Windows\Memory.dmp or C:\Windows\Minidumps*.dmp). Install WinDbg and open the .dmp file. Click the !Analyze link. Now it'll show you the stack from the thread that killed Windows, and show you which files that were involved. Often WinDbg will point you direcly at a specific driver file. I can recommend reading Mark Russinovich's blog and books. You can download WinDbg from Microsoft. So the question to the user is: "Can you e-mail me your dump file?" share|improve this answer answered Apr 30 '09 at 19:52 Frode Lillerud 1,07611519 I would love to see a dump file that is small enough to be emailed! –Joel Mansford Jun 21 '09 at 23:02 2 Minidumps are small, around 90k –mhenry1384 Dec 21 '09 at 17:06 add a comment| up vote
