The monitor showed nothing. The boot beep was longer, about a full second or more. The boot process repeated itself over and over, each time displaying nothing and just beeping. I unplugged the system and moved the rightmost RAM stick over one slot. That did it! My primary question: the RAM is under http://superuser.com/questions/326297/bad-ram-sticks-or-faulty-motherboard-slots warranty – should I take it back, or this a problem with the motherboard? I'd like to be able to use the dual channel capability. According to the motherboard manual, I should put the two sticks in the leftmost slots (of the same color) and not one in each of a different color. So, as of this moment (as I write this!) I don't know what memory state it's in. Secondary question: How do I check? Everything seems fine; should I be worrying? I really hope it's not the mobo. I use Kingston HyperX DDR2 RAM on a Gigabyte motherboard. Another detail I should probably mention: I ran memtest about a half year ago, overnight, (RAM was in the leftmost two slots) with no errors. The whole story goes like this: I've been having trouble for two years now figuring out the cause of my system lockup, which happens fairly often but irregularly. I've ruled out temperature and overheating, HDD error; I've installed new drivers for everything, etc. I really hope the RAM is the problem, because then I could just get a new pair and be done with the system freezing issue. memory motherboard dual-channel share|improve this question edited Aug 22 '11 at 8:31 Gaff 12.4k113655 asked Aug 22 '11 at 7:50 userJD-512 18113 Running memtest again cannot hurt. –soandos Aug 22 '11 at 7:56 There's a very low probability that both RAM sticks are fau
starting the remainder of the boot process. If the computer passes the POST, the computer may give a single beep (some computers may beep twice) as it starts and continue to boot. However, if the computer fails the POST, the computer will either not beep http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm or generate a beep code that tells the user the source of the problem. If your computer has an irregular POST or a beep code not mentioned below, follow the POST troubleshooting steps to determine the failing hardware component. Hi. So I was surfing, downloading and listening to music on my pc when all of a sudden it hung. I restarted it and it just kept on restarting, without getting to the log-in page. I tried logging on in safe mode, but that didn't work either. I was ready to format the hd, but I changed the setting from quick POST to disabled and I saw the memory read as 524, when I had 1Gig, so I tried to further isolate the problem. Proc: Sempron 2400 Mobo: KT600A RAM: OCZ Platinum PC3200 1. Removed both sticks from their slots, and the pc beeped. 2. Inserting a stick into a slot allowed me to log on to Windows again. 3. I tested each individual stick in all three slots and ran memtest 3 times per stick/slot combo. I also surfed heavily (opening multiple windows) using both IE and Firefox. And I ran flash streaming video from yahoo and google. - Firefox and IE would constantly shut down and report an error but they didn't shut down at the same time. Firefox would always die first and then followed by IE a few minutes later. Watching streaming video usually restarts the pc. - Each memtest check had at least one instance where no errors were detected, but both Firefox and IE still shut down. - Inserting a stick into DIM 1 resulted in more browser errors, more frequent restarts. With stick A in DIM 1, the pc wouldn't even enter the log in screen. - Inserting both sticks in DIM 1 and DIM 3 (my normal config) the POST still showed 524MB RAM. - I can usually surf longer, keep programs running longer with a stick in DIM 2. which was unused til now. - Sometimes, not often, start up programs like Zone Alarm and Ewido would report an error and shut down. - Even at idle, the pc still restarts, sometimes it took as long as an hour, sometimes as soon as 20 minutes. - I downloaded and reinstalled
