between GParted and GParted Live? GParted is the partition editor application. GParted Live is a small bootable GNU/Linux distribution that contains the partition editor application. 5: What are the dependencies of GParted? You will need Parted >= 1.7.1 and Gtkmm >= 2.8.x Get Parted from http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/ and Gtkmm from http://gtkmm.org/ Also, several file systems are supported through their native tools. See gparted boot flag the features page for more information on these tools. For a more detailed list of package dependencies, see the "Building from Source" section of the README file. 6: Is it safe? Short answer: Yes, it is safe :) By using the official tools for each file system and performing extensive checks before any actual operation I think GParted is as safe as it can/should be. Of course you have to realize I cannot give any guarantees, so you should probably make a backup of important data before toying with your partitions. NOTE: If you move a partition that is used in the operating system boot process (for example the C: drive in Windows), then the operating system might fail to boot. To fix this problem you will need to repair the boot configuration. See FAQ #13 for Linux/GRUB. See FAQs #14, #15, and #16 for Windows. See FAQ #21 for Mac OS X. 7: Is there a maximum to the amount of operations in the list? Nope, that is, not one an ordinary human being will ever reach. I myself t

I am having issues with the Windows partition and I have a few general questions regarding Gparted. I opened up Gparted this morning for the first time since installing it so I could change the boot flag on a USB drive and I noticed that /dev/sda2 (the Windows partiton) had a warning sign next to it. I right clicked it and selected information and the warning message tells me that the filesystem check failed and NTFS is inconsistent. Could someone explain to me in depth what this means and how to run chkdsk /f on Windows? This is a screenshot of Gparted. Side note: I noticed that Windows 7 created or this computer came installed with a Windows recovery partition which I want to get rid of because if I ever need to restore Windows I would prefer to do it manually because I have all of my files backed up on my desktop and this recovery drive is taking up too much space. Also, I would like to make my Ubuntu partition large

What tool to fix? up vote 1 down vote favorite I used Avira Rescue Disk (Ubuntu 12.04) to access a broken NTFS boot partition. Windows 7 how to use fails to mount it: it displays a bluescreen ("UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME") and restarts immediately. With the Rescue Disk I could backup the most important data (Ubuntu does not fail on mounting). Now I tried gparted to fix the partition. To analyse the partition, gparted runs a scanning-only ntfsresize first. A similar (= non-writing) but manual run of ntfsresize -info --force /dev/sda3 gives: ntfsresize v2012.1.15AR.1 (libntfs-3g) Device name : /dev/sda3 NTFS volume version: 3.1 Cluster size : 4096 bytes Current volume size: 484336226816 bytes (484337 MB) Current device size: 484336230400 bytes (484337 MB) Checking for bad sectors ...
