This system feeds fuel fumes back to the gas tank instead of letting them to vent into the atmosphere. The single most common cause for codes in the range or P0440 to P0456 is improper seating of the gas cap. The gas cap is not the only failure item, but it is the most common, and the most common malady of the gas cap is that it is not installed, or not securely tightened.
