Sometime ago I installed Openfiler on a scrap machine and threw 3 500GB drives into it to test the application

out.I was impressed and immediately started using it.I created an iSCSI link to my main file server and started using the system.Because this was supposed to be a test system, I put the drives into a RAID 0 array to give me

the full 1.5TB of space.Which is where my mistake begins... I was so happy with the performance and access to the space, I started storing data on there regularly. However, at somepoint the motherboard crapped out and the Openfiler unit crashed.I moved the 3 drives into another machine and the system starts to boot.I receive the GRUB screen and it dutifully counts down and appears to start booting. However, the only thing I recieve next is the OpenFiler splash screen followed by a blank screen with g2ldr.mbr missing a blinking cursor.I've let the unit sit for sometime to see if it will do anything, but nothing seems to work.I booted a rescue CD and was able to reassemble the RAID array, but I really need the unit to boot in order to access the iSCSI partition. Any thoughts on how to proceed?Ultimately, I just need access to the data on the iSCSI partition, so if there's a workaround that doesn't require me to boot Openfiler, I'd be happy with that too... I'm not sure which version of Openfiler I'm running, but the GRUB screen shows me this: OpenfilerESA(2.6.32-71.18.1.el6-0.20.smp.gcc4.1.x86_64 Thanks for any hints, tips or solutions! What you can do however, is do a reinstall, then search for the forums, there is a script here which restores the iscsi areas. That is unless someone knows what is causing this error.. Did you go into the system with a live cd, and see if there are any notable things in the logs, perhaps the OS can be saved.. Good luck! you are unable to boot into Linux. This is especially true when you are dual booting between windows and Linux OSes. Once when I was working in Windows XP,
How To Recover Corrupted Grub In Linux
I accidentally clicked the hibernate button instead of shutdown. And windows somehow overwrote my chroot /mnt/sysimage MBR which housed the GRUB boot loader. At such times, it pays to have this cool tip at hand. This is what fix windows mbr from linux you do to restore the GRUB boot loader when faced with the above problem. First you need a Linux distribution CD. If you are using Fedora (RedHat) then the first CD is sufficient. But you may https://forums.openfiler.com/index.php?/topic/6641-openfiler-hangs-after-grub/ also use any of the live CDs like Knoppix, Ubuntu Live CD and so on.With Fedora CDBoot your computer with the first CD of Fedora in your CD drive (You have to enable your PC to boot from the cdrom, which you can set in the BIOS settings). At the installation boot prompt that you get, enter the following command: boot: linux rescue ... and press Enter. The installer will ask you http://www.aboutlinux.info/2005/11/how-to-repair-corrupt-mbr-and-boot.html a few questions like the language you would like to use, the type of keyboard etc. Then, if you have linux previously installed on your machine, the Fedora installer will automatically detect it and mount it in the /mnt/sysimage directory. Once the linux partition is mounted, you are dropped into the command shell prompt. The next step is to make your newly mounted directory the root (or parent) directory. This you do by running the chroot command as follows: # chroot /mnt/sysimage# _ Now you are in the shell with respect to the parent directory which is the linux partition on your harddisk. From here, the steps needed depends on which bootloader you are using. You have to have a fair idea what is the device node of your harddisk partition housing your MBR. In most cases, it is /dev/hda if you have an IDE harddisk. But if you have a SCSI harddisk, it will be /dev/sda.Restoring GRUBExecute the following command :# grub-install /dev/hda ... to install GRUB boot loader on to your MBR. And then type exit to reboot the machine. Now your GRUB boot loader is fixed.Restoring LILOLILO stands for LInux LOader which was the boot loader used before GRUB was developed. It is fairly cryptic and is the default bootloader
24, 2013 Few days ago I wrote blog post about OpenFiler virtual appliance deployment and configuration for vSphere homelab. Today, quick how to for in place upgrade from OpenFiler 2.3 to OpenFiler version 2.99.1 and update to OpenFiler 2.99.2. http://vmwaremine.com/2013/01/24/upgrade-openfiler-to-version-2-99/ In fact there is no easy way to do upgrade from 2.3 to 2.99. What has to be done is: export configuration from OpenFiler 2.3 clean install OpenFiler 2.99.1 update to version 2.99.2 restore configuration from OpenFiler 2.3 to OpenFiler 2.99.2 [box type="warning"] Create a backup of data drive before upgrade[/box] Step 1 - backup current configuration From webUI go to System and from right side click on Backup/Restore Step 2 - Fresh how to installation OpenFiler 2.99.1 Download ISO with OpenFiler 2.99 - choose right architecture Create a VM snapshot before upgrade Extend a system disk drive on OpenFiler virtual appliance to 4.2 GB Mount ISO to Virtual machine and boot from CD-ROM press Enter on welcome screen to proceed installation or upgrade Choose keyboard layout and regional settings From a Drop down choose - Create custom layout - for a disk drive partitions Create boot, swap and root / grub in linux partitions: Boot partition size 200 MB mount point - /boot file system - ext3 Create swap partition on a free space file system - swap size - 1024 MB edit root partition mount point / filesystem - ext3 size - consume all free space partition layout after disk partitioning In a boot loader change boot loader type to GRUB and leave boot partition default setting not changed define networking configuration define Time Zone give root password Reboot appliance After reboot open a VM console and verify OpenFiler version. In my example was OpenFiler 2.99.1 Step 3 - update OpenFile with the latest patches Log in to WebUI, use default credentials username - openfiler password - password Go to system and choose from right windows System Update and click on Lunch system update From a new window mark Update all packages and install updates - close window In order to monitor package installation click one more time on Lunch system update When instalaltion is finisched - Reboot appliance Step 4 - restore OpenFiler configuration from backup take a second VM snapshot Log in to WebUI From system tab and from right side click on Backup/Restore Brows to backup file and restore configuration Reboot VM Verify iSCSI target configuration [box type="warning"] Don't forget remove snapshots !!![/box] Step 5 - Install VMware tools start VMware tools installa
