this line I retreive the XML content without any problem. SO I guess its a problem with PL-SQL developer is it? Someone has an explanation? Clearly the data is ok and the client is transporting it ok, but it's simple volume that is doing it. If i run the query like normal, all of those fields just have (CLOB) as the value. I tried using DBMS_LOB.substr(column) and i get the error ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3790379/how-to-query-a-clob-column-in-oracle or value error: character string buffer too small How can i query the CLOB column? sql oracle plsql clob ora-06502 share|improve this question edited Sep 24 '10 at 19:48 Topera 6,768104284 asked Sep 24 '10 at 19:35 Catfish 6,71016107231 1 I'm using TOAD. –Catfish Sep 24 '10 at 20:01 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 24 down vote accepted When getting the substring of a CLOB column and using a query tool that has size/buffer restrictions sometimes you would need to set the BUFFER to a larger size. For example while using SQL Plus use the SET BUFFER 10000 to set it to 10000 as the default is 4000. Running the DBMS_LOB.substr command you can also specify the amount of characters you want to return and the offset from which. So using DBMS_LOB.substr(column, 3000) might restrict it to a small enough amount for the buffer. See oracle documentation for more info on the substr command DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR ( lob_loc IN CLOB CHARACTER SET ANY_CS, amount IN INTEGER := 32767, offset IN INTEGER := 1) RETURN VARCHAR2 CHARACTER SET lob

The XML have some accentuated characters as values (documents are written in french). Here is what the instruction looks like : insert into mytable (id, xmldata) values (p_id, xmltype(p_xmldata)); p_id and p_xmldata are variables previously extracted from the original table. I think the french characters prevents XMLType to clob data in work correctly. Or maybe malformed XML tags? The problem is, the table holds 3k+ XML documents and only 2 are converted in the XMLType column. Update: These are the errors I get when I try a simple: select xmltype(xmldata) from mytable ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error ORA-06512: at "SYS.XMLTYPE", line 254 ORA-06512: at line 1 xml oracle share|improve this question edited May 27 '12 at 20:13 pb2q 37k1184111 asked Aug 2 '09 at 20:20 Philippe 1,3911716 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 7 down vote accepted I used createxml method and now it works fine insert into mytable (id, xmldata) values (p_id, xmltype.createxml(p_xmldata)); share|improve this answer edited Aug 3 '09 at 20:20 answered Aug 2 '09 at 22:18 Philippe 1,3911716 Thanks, you saved my day!!.
