So, I decided to make a video with the fix I found. When I say I found it, I mean I did it by messing with it myself, not by reading anything online (IE: I'm NOT saying that no one else found this before me, just that I didn't steal it from them) So, here's my video with the tutorial: (no tools needed at all) If it works, be sure to at least leave a comment about it, just so I know. I'm a little late to the party...but I just got a PS2 for $20 at a thrift store, and was disappointed to see the Disc Read Error when I tried to play a game. DVDs and CDs got the same error. I followed the instructions here, and turning the little white gear worked!
I marked the gear's current position with a Sharpie, and turned the gear by "clicks". The gear clicks when turned, so I turned it 3 clicks, tested, didn't work. Turned another 3 clicks, tested, etc. Took a few tries, but eventually it started reading discs!
While you have your PS2 open anyway, I'd recommend cleaning the whole insides out. Use a can of air to blow away dust, Windex for hard to clean dust and cru

The issue started randomly when i decided to play the PS3 after having not played it for a considerable time, the PS3 runs fine, but when I insert a disc of any game it acts like it is going to read it but then decides not to, when I was trying the tilt it back trick I could feel it pulsating when it tried to read the disc, on for 2 seconds, off for 1. I usually hear a 2 clickish noise (Like when it loads or ejects a disc) and that is pretty much it. I have tried sticks a second disc in after it which didn't work, and tilting in back which also did not work. I don't feel like playing a crap load of money to fix the console and was hoping for some tricks I could try to get it to read the disc. I almost forgot I have a PS3 Slim.
