I am redirecting the location of the users Favorites folder using Group Policy to be placed in their network HomeDrive (H:). I am having serious issues trying to achieve this with Internet Explorer 7 if a user is trying to add favorites under IE7 it gives out this message Everything works fine under IE6. I have tried reinstalling IE7 http://superuser.com/questions/272291/windows-xp-ie-7-cannot-add-favorites-unspecified-error updating it etc but nothing works. I did some research but most of the fixes are for Vista and they say to disable "Protected Mode" but windows XP does not have Protected mode in IE7. I would update to IE8 but its one of the requirements on this network is to have IE7. We had McAfee antivirus product disallowing access to .url files at file server. It really blocked just .url files so you could create a text file to favorites but not an URL link. :-) share|improve this answer answered Jul 10 '12 at 10:01 Admin 111 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Start with testing a manually created file in the redirected Favorites location to verify that the permissions are correct. This seems like a permissions issue. share|improve this answer answered Apr 18 '11 at 13:10 edusysadmin 2,114611 its definitely not a permissions problem, the user has full control over that folder and to eliminate any discrepancies i have also added the "Everyone" g

I can remove already existing sites from the Favorites bar without any problems. It was working before but I can't quite pinpoint the moment when it stopped working. The current situation internet explorer add is this: When I click the "Star with the green arrow" (aka Add to favorites bar) button then nothing at all happens - no new bookmark, no errors. When I open the "Favorites" menu, click "Add to favorites", select Create in: Favorites Bar and click Add then I get this error: Unable to create 'example.com': Unspecified error How could I fix this? I also tried with Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) - the same problem. bookmarks internet-explorer-8 share|improve this question edited Dec 18 '15 at 9:56 Hennes 51.1k776121 asked Jan 18 '11 at 15:13 Siim K 4,96053157 1 Have you tried dragging a link from the URL bar to the favorites bar? –Moab Jan 18 '11 at 18:47 @Moab: Tried - it works! Nice workaround though the problem still bugs me. If you add this as an aswer I'll +1 it. –Siim K Jan 18 '11 at 19:23 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted A workaround would be to drag a shortcut from the URL bar to the Favorites bar. (this is how I have always done it, just too easy) You could also tr

Thursday, July 19, 2007 Unable to create bookmarks in IE7 - "Unspecified Error" I just had a somewhat interesting security problem in Vista that I thought I'd share. The problem was in Internet Explorer when creating a bookmark, I'd receive a message "Unable to create [URL]. Unspecified error". The problem only occurred in protected mode websites which led me to believe it might have been a permissions issue. Indeed, trying to propagate my local account with full access generated an Access is Denied error, so I replaced ownership on the folder successfully, however the problem was still occurring. A bit of research later and here is what I discovered in a nutshell - Windows Vista introduces a new concept called "Integrity Level". Basically, along with every ACL, there is also a "class" - this defines what types of applications can modify a particular file. - By default, all files allow "Medium" or higher applications to modified them, however Internet Explorer running Protected Mode runs at a "Low" integrity level (basically, IE can only directly write to files with a Low integrity level associated with them, otherwise, the write has to go through the protected mode broker process which runs as a medium level application) - The icacls command line utility (introduced in W2K2 SP2 and Vista) includes a new switch that allows you to set the integrity level To resolve the issue, navigate to c:\users\USERNAME and run the following command against the favorites folder: icacls Favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low The (OI) and (CI) stand for "object inherit" and "container inherit" respectively (propagate permissions basically), and the low is pretty obviously assigning a low integrity level requirem
