When the error appears it lists the "process name" (iexplore.exe or explorer.exe), "Module name" (eg mshtml.dll - this varies) and "assert offset" (eg 004DEB6E - also varies) along with 3 buttons "Ignore Once", "Ignore Always" and "Do not ignore". If I select "do not ignore" the windows error reporting process kicks in but does not find a solution and will ocassionally restart IE or kick me out completely. Selecting "Ignore Once" will often lead to a number of similar popups with either different module or assert offsets.I have gone through device manager to ensure all my drivers are properly updated and have also tried to reinstall to no avail. Not sure if it is connected but Windows Update does not appear to find any updates either even if I try and install Office 2007 and look for updates to that (I know it should find SP2 at least).Any help much appreciated as this is driving me nuts. Belkin Wifi adaptor to allow Windows Updates.... Problem 1: If I open Internet Explorer and click on the tool bar, I get error messages saying "Internet Explorer encountered a validation http://www.networksteve.com/forum/topic.php/Internet_Explorer_Validation_Error/?TopicId=28041&Posts=0 error". The process is iexplorer.exe and it occurs on modules comctl.dll and mshtml.dll. Problem 2: (Which may be related to problem 1) ... if I goto Windows Update, the site immediately responds with a message saying Windows is upto date. However, the response is so quick, no scanning is liley to be taking place...and it is very unusual for a newly installed instance of windows not internet explorer to need any updates. So I think Windows is not upto date at all. I have checked WiFi on Device Manager and the driver seems to be installed with no error messages or warnings. September 10th, 2011 6:49pm Not sure about the error message you're seeing, but have you confirmed that you actually have internet access on the server, eg you're able to connect to other websites, internet explorer encountered or at least ping an external site (if IE throws up the error when you try using it)? IIRC, Windows Server 2008 R2 doesn't actually use the windows update site in the way that older versions do, rather visiting it causes the server to open the local Windows Update client (which obviously doesn't need an internet connection to run), so if you had no internet connection available it wouldn't be able to check in and I suspect will report that there are no updates required. Checking the log file (c:\windows\windowsupdate.log) should show you if Windows Update is having problems connecting to MS to check for updates.
