It is surprisingly difficult to tell if an element is visible on an HTML page. You basically have to traverse up the DOM tree checking to see if the element or any parent element has a css property of 'display:none'. You could just wrap the calling code with a try { element.focus(); } catch (ex) { } Or if you are using something like jQuery if ($element.is(':visible')) { $element.focus(); } share|improve this answer answered Sep 9 '13 at 4:28 Jeremy Bell 62258 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service.
