I keep getting: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close error" The error message is: Internet Explore Error signature AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: urlmon.dll ModVer: 6.0.2900.2960 Offset: 00012f2e I read somewhere that by unchecking thrid party browsers ext. in the, Tools-Option-advance menu http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/internet-explorer-has-encountered-a-problem-urlmon-dll.2690828/ will stop IE6 from shuting down and it does, But I was hoping that I could find a fix for this. The only extensions I use is the goggle tool bar and msn. It has worked great for a year up until https://ch8nt.wordpress.com/2010/02/11/%E2%80%9Cinternet-explorer-has-encountered-a-problem-and-needs-to-close%E2%80%9C-crashing-with-urlmon-dll/ the second to last windows update about a month ago. Anuway is there a way to fix this?? I got no help from Microsoft, instead they led me to Dell etc... Thanks for any help info Ron Guest, Oct 1, 2006 internet explorer #1 Advertisements Rob ^_^ Guest Hi Ron, Check for Updates for your Add-In toolbars from MSN and Google. If you are using the MSN search toolbar with tabbed browsing it has been re-branded to the Live toolbar available from http://toolbar.live.com so you may want to un-install the msn toolbar and install the live version which has better tab control than the earlier msn versions. I had been running with google disabled and left MSN toolbar active and IE was not asking to be closed... I checked google for an update, but I had the latest as their toolbar auto updates.. After installing the live toolbar, I started getting that close message again??? But I checked the view-toolbars in IE and it showed google as checked and live unchecked This was with the live toolbar active(on) and google off??? and when I switched the check marks the opposite happened.. with live checked the google toolbar was loaded??? So I guess I did
Leave a comment Description: I upgraded a user from IE7 to IE8. Later she informs not being able to access an internal SharePoint page, getting the error "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Data in the error report informs that it's crashing on urlmon.dll Event Viewer > Application log also informs the same. After clicking "Don't Send", it just takes her back to the page she was on, and refreshes-the error does not totally crash IE8. She informs being able to access the SharePoint page under IE7. Example of SharePoint page url is http://server2.ch8nt.com/sp/pages.aspx Troubleshooting: I tried regsvr32 urlmon.dll and disabling IE8 add-ons. I could bring up the page fine as me logged in on her PC. I could bring up the page fine in IE8 on Win7. I came across these links mentioning that sites being in a security zone causing the issue. IE8 crashes in urlmon.dll Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) crashes on intranet web-sites (Outlook too) IE8 crashing with faulting module urlmon.dll Resolution: In the user's registry, I changed her Local Intranet zone to look like mine. I investigated sites in her Local Intranet zone and compared to mine when I was logged in on her PC. (Example screenshots and information below) Hers look like: And in the registry, [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\ch8nt.com] "*"=dword:00000001 [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\server1.ch8nt.com] "file"=dword:00000001 Mine looks like: And in the registry, [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\ch8nt.com] "*"=dword:00000001 [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\ch8nt.com\server1] "file"=dword:00000001 The sites were added to the user's Local Intranet zone while she was still on IE7. The sites were added to my Local Intranet zone after I upgraded the PC to IE8. In her Local Intranet zone, I removed file://server1.ch8nt.com. I click close, go back in, the entry is still there! What the heck?! So I go in the registry and delete it. The page now comes up fine for her. To test further, I made my registry for the Local Intranet zone look like hers-when she couldn't access the page-and I get the same error trying to bring up the SharePoint page. In the end, via the registry, I made her Local Intranet zone look like mine. I think IE8's urlmon.dll does not know how to handle the way IE7 added file://server1.ch8nt.com to the Local Intranet zone, specifically wit
