I decided to join this forum and was about to post the same question. I had tried for 2 days to solve this for a family member. The PC was infected with a few trojans/virii etc... Got rid of those but still no internet. I ran SpyBot, AdAware, HijackThis, Super Anti Spyware, MS Security Essentials, etc... Nothing would fix the problem. Luckily I searched first and finally found that this proxy setting was the problem for me as well. I appreciate the folks here and will try to do my part to help others. address is not valid” In this Internet Explorer error message, “address” refers to the whole Uniform Resource Locator (URL) (e.g. http:///www.example.com/foo.html) rather than to a domain name (e.g. www.example.com)1, which is often just one part of the URL. This is often caused by an invalid character in the URL. Internet Explorer tries to correct invalid characters (e.g. replacing backward slashes, “\”, with forward slashes “/”), and will include three forward slashes near the beginning of the address if it seems invalid, e.g. https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-internet-explorer-7-address-is-not-valid-http.938706/ http:`//www.example.com turns into http:///www.example.com and http://?www.example.com turns into http:///?www.example.com Symptoms Solutions The set of characters that are valid depends in a complicated way on their position in the URL (see RFC 3986 for details), but usually a valid URL will: Start with http:// Be followed by a domain name consisting of letters or http://www.getnetgoing.com/Internet-Explorer-The-address-is-not-valid.html numbers, separated by dots Optionally be followed by at most one of each of the following, in this order: A slash “/”, followed by a file pathname A question mark, followed by a query A number sign “#” followed by an alphanumeric string Check that the address that you used did not include other characters. Characters other than letters, digits, underscores and hyphens are often shown using percent encoding in which single characters are represented by a percent symbol followed by two hexadecimal digits, e.g. a space character should be encoded as “%20” What worked for other people Other people fixed this error after determining that it was caused by spyware on their computer in particular browser hijackers malformed proxy information Extra information Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) The proper structure of a URL is defined in RFC 3986: scheme “:” authority path [ “?” query ] [ “#” fragment ] e.g. http://rfc-editor.org/cgi-bin/rfcsearch.pl?searchwords=http&num=25 The scheme (e.g. “http”) defines the for

I have seen several cases recently where my clients' computers are unable to access the Internet (Windows address not valid updates, AV updates, websites, etc.) even though the computer has a network connection. Additionally, when trying to visit any website, Internet Explore would redirect to http:/// and display a "address is not valid" error. Fortunately, the solution in all of these cases was rather simple. The follow is not guaranteed to solve all Internet connectivity problems. There are many, many reasons you may not be able to access websites: firewalls, malware, damaged hardware, etc. The solution here seems to work in most cases where Internet Explorer (or your browser of choice) is giving you the "address is not valid" error message for ALL websites you attempt to visit. This problem seems to be caused by an incorrectly configured proxy server. In all the cases I have seen, this results from a recently removed malware infection. I won't go into what proxy servers are used for here, but if you are curious check out Wikipedia. Here is what you need to do to reset the proxy server settings on your computer: Open up Internet Explorer (even if y
Not Valid" error in IE Discussion in 'Software' started by jayro, Mar 31, 2009. jayro Private E-2 Can anyone tell me the source of and fix to Internet Explorer displaying "address not valid" when typing an IP or URL in the address bar? I know I have a routable internet connection because PING and TRACEROUTE tests are both successful to "www.yahoo.com". This error even displays when trying to reach my router's default gateway IP. Thanks in advance!!! jayro jayro, Mar 31, 2009 #1 Bart_NL Private E-2 I have the exact same problem on my new computer. Since I liked the beta of Windows 7 so much I installed Windows 7 RC 64-bit. After the install (with only ATI drivers) I get the same message when I try to open different Internet url's. A dutch forum (http://tweakers.net) works like a charm. But every search engine I know, doesn't. (Yahoo, Google, Bing.) I've tried the RC version of Windows 7 and the 7201 build, both have the same problem.. Bart_NL, Jun 11, 2009 #2 jayro Private E-2 Hi Bart_NL...... I haven't found a solution to this issue. As you can see from the lack of posts to this, there's NOT much info out there on it. Good luck to us both.... LOL!!! Please do let us know here at Major Geeks if you come upon a solution. Cheers!!! jayro jayro, Jun 12, 2009 #3 Bart_NL Private E-2 Got it!! In my case (with Windows 7 64-bit build 7201) it was temporarily solved when I disabled the Windows Firewall. Since I'm behind a NAT Router I don't need a firewall so I left it off.. One day later the problem re-occured and I replaced my DNS server with one of OpenDNS. The combination of the disabled firewall and the openDNS server solved my problem. Don't know what the reason for the problem was, but everything is working now. Who is your ISP? But from a CMD prompt type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter, then run CCLeaner and remove all the temp junk. DavidGP, Jun 13, 2009 #5 jayro Private E-2 Thanks Bart!!! Excellent info.
