expected website, and error message like the following appears: “This tab has been recovered. A problem with this web page caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab.” CAUSE This problem can occur due to one or more non-Microsoft add-ons running with Internet Explorer. RESOLUTION Start Internet Explorer to No Add-ons mode with clicking Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). If the issue doesn’t occur in No Add-ons mode, use Add-on Manager to disable all add-ons and then turn them on only as needed until the problem reoccurs. This will allow you to determine which add-on is causing the problem. To open Add-on Manager, take the following steps: 1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button and then clicking Internet Explorer. 2. Click the Tools button, and then click Manage Add-ons. In Internet Explorer 8, you can disable toolbars by clicking the X on the side of the toolbar. If there are any add-ons associated with the toolbar, a dialog box will be displayed where you can keep or disable the additional add-ons. For more information about add-ons, please also see Internet Explorer add-ons: frequently asked questions. If disabling add-ons doesn't solve the problem, try resetting Internet Explorer back to its default settings. This clears all changes that have been made to Internet Explorer since it was installed, while retaining your favorites and feeds. To reset Internet Explorer back to its default settings, please take the following steps: 1. Close all Inte

IE says the tab has been recovered. I see this a lot at work and the solution for http://techynotes.net/problem-internet-explorer-says-the-tab-has-been-recovered/ me (every time so far) is to disable an option in IE called http://robspangler.com/blog/random-ie8-crashes-this-tab-has-been-recovered/ "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks". Now, this option may help to prevent "online attacks" but it sure causes way too many crashes to be worth having it enabled. Here's how to disable it. Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools. Click Internet Options. Click internet explorer the Advanced Tab. Scroll almost to the bottom (it's under security). Find the option "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks" and uncheck it. Click Apply and then Click OK. Restart IE and then load the site that was crashing the tab in IE. occurring on a few site that I had started development on last month. I was getting crashes in IE8 with the following error "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Followed by "This tab has been recovered." when the site came back up. This one was not fun to diagnose, I initially thought it was something with the HTML5, Chrome Frame or Modernizr. I was wrong, it was a bug with jQuery. The Solution It is an issue with jQuery version 1.6.2 (which was the latest version at time of development). Luckily they fixed the issue, so the fix on your end is simple… Update to the latest version of jQuery. Here's the support ticket from their change log. 26 Responses to "Random IE8 Crashes - "This tab has been recovered"" Matt Clements November 10th, 2011 So glad you have found this and published your information - I have been experiencing the same issues with sites that I have been working on; and this has now resolved these issues. Thanks 🙂 Reply Rob November 10th, 2011 No problem Matt! Glad it was helpful, I appreciate the pingback. Reply James November 11th, 2011 I spent a lot of time trying to debug this, even just to reproduce it. For example, Windows 7 + IE8 works just fine. Meanwhile, customer complaints kept growing. Took me some mad googling just to find this article. Thanks! Reply d3vkit November 14th, 2011 Oh you are a lifesaver! I had just updated jQuery so I thought this couldn't be the problem. And yet, new version a couple weeks ago. This is INVALUABLE info and I wish it was hitting higher on Google! Reply Franck November 18th, 2011 Indeed you're a saver. Spend a week trying to debug this problem because I had updated to that version a month ago but just started testing the website on IE. Thanks alot Reply Ian December 8th, 2011 Brilliant, thanks for this, the last thing you expect is for jquery to be the problem.
