issue came up today. I only have a partial explanation for it but I’ll ramble anyway… A VM server (running CentOS 5.x) was recently moved from one infrastructure to another and kept the same IP configuration (intentionally). Upon boot-up, the system never showed up on network. Hmm… “QUICK ROBIN! TO THE http://mikeberggren.com/post/100289806126/if-up VIRTUAL CONSOLE!” Digging deeper, it became clear that the machine failed to initialize the http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/39733/error-some-other-host-already-uses-address-ipaddress NIC: [root@foobox ~]# service network restart Shutting down interface eth0: [ OK ] Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up interface eth0: Error, some other host already uses address 1.1.1.1. [ FAILED ] (IP has been changed to protect the innocent ;-) ) Why was it failing though? ip address The first obvious reason was another server claiming ownership of the IP (yet simple ping tests from another host on the same subnet didn’t find anything). OK admins, I can hear you yelling at your monitors from here - I know it’s common for ICMP traffic to be blocked and that ping isn’t necessarily a reliable test. Just leave that be for a bit…. The issue persisted even after assigning entirely random ip address conflict IPs to the server. Eventually I became curious about how exactly CentOS was determining if an IP was in use. I initially thought that the network service was doing something fancy and complicated. Nope! In the interface initialization script /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth it has the following: if ! arping -q -c 2 -w 3 -D -I ${REALDEVICE} ${IPADDR} ; then net_log $"Error, some other host already uses address ${IPADDR}." exit 1 fi Let’s break that first line down piece by piece: if ! – The if command combined with a boolean operator that equates to the logical not. In other words, it inverts the exit status of the command. arping – One of my favorite commands! Useful for manually issuing ARP requests to confirm ownership of an IP (DUH). -q – Quiet/no output. Nothing is displayed. -c 2 – The number of ARP request packets to send. -w 3 – The amount of time (in seconds) to wait for a response. -D – Duplicate address detection mode (for the gory details, see RFC2131, 4.4.1). -I ${REALDEVICE} – The interface to issue the arp request from. I haven’t dug deep enough to find where the variable is set (although I suspect it’s a combination of the DEVICE variable defined in ifcfg-eth files and some logic under /etc/sysconfig/n

When I run: ifdown eth0:5 and after ifup eth0:5, I get this error: Error, some other host already uses address 10.0.0.1. After I run ifdown eth0:5, I can ping the 10.0.0.1 host, but I cannot connect to it via ssh (from the same host). Before of ifdown command, I can ping the 10.0.0.1 and connect to it via ssh (from the same host). If I type service network restart, everything is ok again. Question: Can anyone infer why that behavior? N.B. I don't have the NetworkManager installed, and I don't have another host with this IP on the LAN (10.0.0.1). EDIT: The result of $arp -na command: ? Chances are that another host on the same network has the same address. In this case, change it. –Aki May 31 '12 at 11:54 @Aki you are right I think, because when I ping the 10.0.0.1 after the ifdown run, the time is much grater than the previous one. Anyway, I changed the gateway of my server to another workable one, and the problem was not anymore. I think there were some routing conflicts. Thanks. –artaxerxe May 31 '12 at 12:14 RHEL-like distros have arping in their networking scripts which checks if the IP is already used in LAN. This explains the error. –Jiri Xichtkniha May 31 '12 at 21:20 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote There IS another entity using that IP. You could use nmap -O 10.0.0.1 to find out what it is. share|improve this answer answered Jan 4 '13 at 21:40 Nils 10.3k52660 Is there a way to force to use already used IP addres
