Currently the way I travel a lot I have to stay in hotels and be forced to use their hotel WiFi. I don't feel secure doing so, and prefer to use the comcast hotspots that are pretty much everywhere by me, but sometimes I bring a desktop for longer stays at the hotels across my state. So my question is, I usually use an ethernet cable to bridge connection from the Laptop ( Which is acquiring the Xfinity hotspot ) to my desktop. And it works for all o

I have a Dell XPS laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate I want to use for bridging the Ethernet connection to it's WiFi connection. WiFi connects perfectly to the net. I enabled ICS on the WiFi and then bridged the WiFi and Ethernet connections. WiFi still connects to the net fine on the http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f31/solved-ip-address-conflict-network-bridging-1007330.html XPS, but when I connected another PC to the laptop via Ethernet, it only shows a 169.254.116.152 IP address on the PC and throws a Network Error "Windows has detected an IP address conflict." It looks like for some reason DHCP on the XPS is not assigning an IP to the PC to bridge the Ethernet connection to the WiFi on the XPS. When I do "ipconfig /renew" on the PC it says "An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection... The DHCP https://forums.techguy.org/threads/network-bridge-wifi-to-ethernet-win7-ip-conflict-no-dhcp-advanced-user-needs-help.1080084/ client has obtained an IP Address that is already in use on the network... " I am a fairly technical person having built computers and network for the last 20 years, I've been trying multiple solutions for hours and reading everything I can, but this one has me stumped. Try one or the other but not both at the same time. Doing both pretty much guarantees failure. The ICS will assign a static IP to the ethernet connection but it needs to be dynamic for the bridge to work. I did try that first, following standard procedure for bridging, but it didn't work. However, to troubleshoot, I just tried it again following these steps from my config noted above. Removed both network connections from the bridge delete the bridge unblug the ethernet cable checked to see if ICS was enabled on WiFi

I bridge the two network connections under Windows\Control Panel\Network Connections. This gives me a single bridged network connection. DHCP is enabled on this bridged connection and everything functions as expected on the laptop as though I had a single wireless DHCP enabled connection. I want to connect a desktop PC with only a wired NIC to the same network as the laptop. It appears that I wrongly assumed that the Windows Bridging feature would act as basic layer two switching device with the added function of translating from wireless to wired. The first thing I tried to do was attach the desktop PC to the laptop with DHCP enabled on the desktop PC. But when I try this I get an IP conflict on both the laptop and the desktop PC. Why doesn't this work? The only way I can get the desktop PC to access the network correctly (with this particular setup) is to manually configure the IP address of the desktop PC. Why does this work but enabling DHCP doesn't? This may or may not be relevant but to get the bridge working at all I had to force the wireless NIC into 'promiscuous mode' as described in this article. Someone did mention (on another site) that it might be something to do with MAC address masquerading. But why would MAC masquerading be implemented by the bridge? And if this is the case how can it be turned off? windows-xp dhcp mac-address wireless-bridge share|improve this question asked Mar 22 '13 at 17:13 David 3801511 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 activ
