I have an older 20 g iPod. I dropped it (only 3 ipod classic hard reset feet but hard surface) last week and after that it malfunctioned and then stopped functioning. restore ipod classic to factory settings I have tried the reset several times without success. My Mac does not recognize it either in the information about this Mac ipod classic diagnostic mode or the disk utility or the iPod updater. I would love to be able to revive it but had assuimed it dead. I can get an apple on the screen when I do a reset and the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KoWw9PZv50 battery icon shows that it is charging ... and then the exclamation point with the folder comes up.Any thoughts would be more than appreciated. Cannot get itunes to recognize it. It showed up as a unrecognized disk once and showed up in disk repair as ipod media. When I found out how to use the disk utility before updating it would no longer show up on my ibook at all. The screen goes back and forth between charging, the apple and the folder with the exclamation point. There is a constant whirring and clicking and I cannot shut it down. I have also restarted my computer. Any suggestions? Cancel Crisb Rep: 3.1k 12 9 2 Posted: 10/18/2010 Options Permalink History Hi, as you already changed the battery, headphone and back cover, it seems like you know what to do to fix it. First make sure that the hard drive cable is seated properly on both ends! Most common when the sad face icon appears is, that the hard drive is corrupted/damaged. But, you should try this first. Follow the link and set the iPod to disk mode, then hook it up to a computer and restore it via iTunes. http://www.command-tab.com/2006/03/30/hi... Set the iPod to disk mode sometimes needs a couple of tries, once it took me half an hour. If it can´t be restored it means, the hard drive is damaged OR cannot be read. That means, the hard drive itself is damaged OR the hard drive cable has been flexed one time to often during repair. As the flex cable is very cheap in terms of a new hard drive, i would give it a try and buy a new flex cable, before i would buy a new hard drive. Was this answer helpful? Yes No Voted
