lucky, there is a temporary fix, as it will crash again, so, not much useful suggestion, only good for those who don't do iTunes library backup, and need to copy back the music from iPod to PC using 3rd Party software. This normally done by desperate iPod Classic owners who don't want to go to Apple Store or 3rd Party Service vendors, to have it fix.Make sure you have recharge the batteries for at least 2 hours.Put a rubber mouse pad on a flat table.Hold your iPod vertically and slam the base on the rubber mat with some force a few timesReset your iPod -> Press Menu and Center buttons simultaneously for 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON and release the buttons. You may have to do it several times, as the problem is cause by the HD head stuck in retract position, and this impact may free the head or it may crash the head depending on your luck.Good Luck! If I am correct, iTunes 9.X (Whatever version) should be able to work with it. When a red X appears on your iPod screen, especially the 6th Gen classics, it is usually a hard drive failure. If it charges, you know it's not the battery. Try formatting it with Windows, then do a restore on it from iTunes. If that doesn't work, try giving it a good hand slap on the table (with the sync port pointing down to the table). I know this might sound barbaric, but the needle in your hard drive might have been displaced and needs to be realigned. Also, the hard drive cable that connects your hard drive to your logic board might be slightly loose. Doing this will help you connect. If all else fails, which I hope it doesn't, then I believe you should sell it on eBay or try to replace the hard drive. A hard drive for this model can be found here.
