I could reproduce it with MySQL 5.1 and 5.5 installed from the official debian repos (squeeze, wheezy). I don't know whether 5.6 is affected. How to repeat: - install MySQL server from an official deb repo (apt-get install mysql-server); - make sure that --syslog is enabled in the special config file; - connect to the server and run FLUSH LOGS (works all right); - add log-error=

I have been trying to set log rotation for mysql slow using linux logrotate feature, and my script seems to get stuck on mysqladmin flush-logs. So I logged into mysql and just entered FLUSH LOGS;. Not surprisingly I get an error: mysql> flush logs; ERROR 1105 (HY000): Unknown error Now I have been going around asking for ideas, but none seem to work, http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/16339/mysql-flush-logs-unknown-error its not permissions, not owners, not SELinux I know that there used to be some bug, like in 2005 or 2008 ... but its 2012, I assume its fixed. Hints * Find the path of log_error for mysql. Send the following to mysql: show global variables like '%err%'; * Check the permissions and make sure the UID (from ps -C mysqld -f at linux prompt) has permissions to write to the file Hoping this helps somebody. Adam If the above doesn't work, look here because there are tons of hits: Google Search Results I hate to break it to you but if MySQL says unknown error, it means it's unknown and you're stuck figuring it out for yourself. You may need to report this as a bug if you are running the latest version of MySQL and still can't figure it out.
