It's terribly dangerous if not used perfectly which is an enormous nuisance to do, though I've seen you're at least trying here. You escaped two out of three variables and introduced a gigantic injection hole, though. Close enough is not good enough on the public internet. At the very least you should be using PDO unless you have a very good reason because when using SQL placeholders these mistakes are usually non-existent. –tadman Dec 17 '12 at 6:54 Thanks for this comment, i appreciate it and i will look into this. I haven't seen anything on it but ill do my research! –sparkones Dec 17 '12 at 7:31 Thanks everyone for all the comments i appreciate ithere for a quick overview of the site Help Center Detailed answers to any questions you might have Meta http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6090500/how-to-get-a-detailed-error-report-when-a-php-mysql-script-fails Discuss the workings and policies of this site About Us Learn more http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17053466/how-to-display-errors-for-my-mysqli-query about Stack Overflow the company Business Learn more about hiring developers or posting ads with us Stack Overflow Questions Jobs Documentation Tags Users Badges Ask Question x Dismiss Join the Stack Overflow Community Stack Overflow is a community of 6.2 million programmers, just like you, helping mysql error each other. I have the following statements where the script fails and displays the custom error message or die mysql - the contents of the "or die". I want to get the actual error from MySQL (instead of the custom error i have mentioned), which would give better idea about the scenario - whether its a database issue or server connectivity issue etc.. this is the code i have where i need to enhance the error reporting $query = "SELECT * FROM table_name"; $result = mysqli_query($db_conn, $query) or die('Connected to database, but querying failed'); thanks! php mysql report die share|improve this question edited May 23 '11 at 8:17 chiborg 11.8k54974 asked May 22 '11 at 20:14 arun nair 1,131102544 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted Have a look at the manual page for mysqli_error. In the section "Procedural style" you'll find a complete example that shows how to set up the database connection and querying the database, both steps with error handling. If you want detailed error information from your scripts you can put the lines error_reporting( E_ALL ); ini_set('log_errors', true); ini_set('error_log'
