youngest woke up. I had gnucash, keypass, chrome and LibreOffice calc up when my son found the power button.... Nooooooo! :D When I restarted Ubuntu I was met with the following: Error: no such device... grub rescue> I don't think the system was updating and only other software that could be running was CrashPlan. Below is my initial attempt grub rescue> ls (hd0) There is no partition recognized… I tried to change the directory to hd0, but couldn’t (no something something) Then I started Ubuntu up in Live CD mode by “trying Ubuntu” from my original installation CD. I ran Boot Info Script by downloading it from bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net Extracting using the default extractor (not the terminal) Then in the terminal I wrote: Sudo ~/Downloads/bootinfoscript The result is posted below. Now I cannot boot any operating system anymore, unfortunately. When trying to boot, the following error message appears on my display: error: no such device: c4d250ab-b08f-4a9a-84b9-344d9ea61e03. grub rescue> The following steps led to this problem: 1) First try with wubi - I made a new partition of 100MB, using the Windows 7 system tools. I gave this partition the name U: and restarted the computer twice - I then downloaded Wubi from ubuntu.com/download and tried to install ubuntu 11.04 on this new partition U: - Installing worked well, but after rebooting an error message appeared (after ubuntu sucessfully booted) and told me "no root file system is defined". When I clicked on "okay", the message just appeared again and did not let me continue. - Thus I un-installed ubuntu 11.04 again in Windows 7 (using the Windows 7 system tools to un-install programs) 2) Second try - In a second attempt I first deleted the before newly made partition (i.e. I told windows to let this space free, can't remember how that was called actually, this partition was un-used now however, and had no letter anymore)

I'll try to cover it all (albeit, no such device in pieces), so please be patient. I decided to install Linux Mint 11 where I previously had Ubuntu 10.10. Before this install, I had a partition with Windows XP, which--at some time in the distant past--I used to dual boot into. I removed the partition in this install. After installation, the system fails to boot. After the check for a CD/DVD, it prints: error: no such device: xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx GRUB rescue> There were no problems booting Ubuntu. I seem to recall a similar issue last time I did an install (instead of an upgrade) to Ubuntu. It's been a while, but I thought I fixed it using FIXMBR and/or FIXBOOT from the XP CD. Those did not work this time. The GRUB rescue> prompt seems to be broken. Even help doesn't work. I am able to ls, which yields: GRUB rescue> ls (hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1) (hd2) (hd2,msdos5) (hd2,msdos3) (hd2,msdos2) (hd2,msdos1) Further, I don't know what this device is. I can't find a matching UUID under /dev/disk/by-uuid. For that matter, there are no UUIDs for my booting hard drive (sd
