on my computer this afternoon. Now I cannot boot any operating system anymore, unfortunately. When trying to boot, the following error message appears on my display: error: no such device: c4d250ab-b08f-4a9a-84b9-344d9ea61e03. grub rescue> The following steps led to this problem: 1) First try with wubi - I made a new partition of 100MB, using the Windows 7 system tools. I gave this partition the name U: and restarted the computer twice - I then downloaded Wubi from ubuntu.com/download and tried to install ubuntu 11.04 on this new partition U: - Installing worked well, but after rebooting an error message appeared (after ubuntu sucessfully booted) and told me "no root file system is defined". When I clicked on "okay", the message just appeared again and did not let me continue. - Thus I un-installed ubuntu 11.04 again in Windows 7 (using the Windows 7 system tools to un-install programs) 2) Second try - In a second attempt I first deleted the before newly made partition (i.e. I told windows to let this space free, can't remember how that was called actually, this partition was un-used now however, and had no letter anymore) and followed the following step-by-step explanation how to install ubuntu: http://blog.sudobits.com/2011/04/23/...rom-usb-or-cd/ - The installation worked well, then it told me to re-boot to finish the installation - My computer did not shut d

I'll try to cover it all (albeit, in pieces), so please be patient. I decided to install Linux Mint 11 where I previously had Ubuntu http://superuser.com/questions/359417/linux-installation-wont-boot-due-to-grub-no-such-device-error 10.10. Before this install, I had a partition with Windows XP, which--at some time in the distant past--I used to dual boot into. I removed the partition in this install. After installation, the system fails to boot. After the check for a CD/DVD, it prints: error: no such device: xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx GRUB rescue> There were no problems booting Ubuntu. I seem to recall a similar issue last time I did an install (instead of an upgrade) to Ubuntu. It's been a while, but I thought I fixed it using FIXMBR and/or FIXBOOT from the XP CD. Those did not work this time. The GRUB rescue> prompt seems to be broken. Even help doesn't work. I am able to ls, which yields: GRUB rescue> ls (hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1) (hd2) (hd2,msdos5) (hd2,msdos3) (hd2,msdos2) (hd2,msdos1) Further, I don't know what this device is. I can't find a matching UUID under /dev/disk/by-uuid. For that matter, there are no UUIDs for my booting hard drive (sda, below). My setup is a Frankenbox. I know not to rely on device enumeration in such a mix, but they're given below for easy discussion. Ch 0 Master: 250GB PATA (sda) sda1 Ch 0 Slave: none Ch

I have reinstalled the whole base system twice. Still the same error:error: no such device: 8f2e32e6-7d21-4f4d-8661-6f1ec6e658eeGrub Rescue>Edit: I just noticed that the UUID grub is giving me does not match any of my partitions...It just leaves me at that.I have two hard drives. One no such is a brand spankin' new SSD that I know works perfectly fine (I test installed Ubuntu on it to be sure), the other the regurlar old hard drive that came with the computer many years ago. sda is the hard drivesdb is the SSDI have the SSD with swap and / on it in two partitionsthe hard drive is /homeBecause of the inherent speed increase on my SSD no such device and the fact that /boot is on there, I decided to install Grub on sdb. The installer offered the following options:sdasda1sdb -->I hit enter to install Grub here, because I read that you have to install it to the MBR and not a partition.sdb1sdb5Because of the inconsistent naming by Linux and Grub, I set Grub to boot by UUID, so that kernel updates cannot change the drive naming.(Hence the UUID error)Here is my /etc/fstab # # /etc/fstab: static file system information # #
