Options to fix: 1) Open Activity Monitor, select all processes: type in daemon. I must admit that as well as being frustrated at not being able to get to my mail, I am also frustrated at coding that allows an application to get into a "locked" state like this where the only way out is to force-quit an application that is not actually dead, but appears to be stuck in a loop of the programmer's making...
