Office 2007 Install Error Windows Installer Cannot Update Protected Files
108 Comments 0 I am trying to install Office 2007 onto a clean install fp4autl.dll windows xp sp3 of Windows XP (on a friends eee PC - it software update for web folders (kb907306) is really a sweet little laptop.. anyway), I get the error above about protected files. Here is the solution. (This may have happened because in optimizing XP down, some files were deleted). 1. From Windows install disk goto E:\I386 folder and open open (Double click) on the FP40EXT.CAB file. It should open. (or - if you do not have the disk, find a working XP computer and go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\40\bin). 2. find fp4autl.dll in the list and copy it (ctrl-c) 3. go to c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin and paste it (ctrl-v) 4. Restart the 2007 office install Viola! (thanks guys over at http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=627360) Powered by ScribeFire. fp4autl.dll (FrontPage extensions) Categories: Windows by Bogdan Office 2007 installation error on XP One day I had the surprise of being unable to install Office 2007 on a custom XP SP3 install (from a USB stick). The error was “The Windows Installer service cannot update one or more protected Windows files.” In Event Viewer “System” log, I see this MsiInstaller error 1193: “Product: Microsoft Software Update for Web Folders (English) 12 — Error 1933. The Windows Installer service cannot update one or more protected Windows files. SFP Error: 21. List of protected files: c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin\fp4autl.dll”. Search FP40EXT.CAB on the Windows install CD, open it with 7-ZIP, search for fp4autl.dll and http://www.benshoemate.com/2007/12/17/office-2007-the-windows-installer-service-cannot-update-one-or-more-protected-windows/ copy it in c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin Other ways to open a CAB file : Method 1 : You can open a CAB file directly from Windows by clicking Start / Run, and then by running the following command: regsvr32 cabview.dll Method 2 : To extract information from a .cab file in Windows XP:1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK. 3. Click http://www.evilbox.ro/windows/office-2007-install-error/ Expand File. 4. In the File to restore box, type the name of the file that you want to restore. 5. In the Restore from box, type the path to the Windows XP .cab file from which you want to restore the file, or click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.
NOTE: The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP compact disc (CD). 6. In the Save file in box, type the path to which you want the new file extracted, or click Browse To to locate the folder that you want. 7. Click Expand. 8. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart. Command (power users - extracts the file to C:expand d:\i386\FP40EXT.CAB /f:\fp4autl.dll c:\ This assumes your Windows CD drive letter is D: PS : In my case I just searched the fp4autl.dll on the internet and found it here. Ran into the same problem (XP installed from pendrive). niegowic April 14, 2013 at 6:18 pm (UTC 3) Link to this comment Reply Worked lik2007 enterprise on xp sp2 with all updates and ie7 installed. I got the ==The windows installer service cannot update one or more protected windows files ==error and http://computerboom.blogspot.com/2008/11/office-2007-windows-installer-service.html office 2007 rolled back. SOLUTION: i did look at the event viewer. it http://churchit.blogspot.com/2007/09/windows-installer-service-cannot-update.html names a file called fpault.dll as failing the protected files check this file was not on my computer at all. It was supposed to be in c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin the reason it was not on my computer may well have been because i used nlite to modify my windows xp office 2007 installation on this computer to get rid of some of the crap by a miracle, i found this fpault.dll file on the original xp cd, hiding in I386\FP40EXT.CAB which is not a place i would ordinarily be looking i extracted it and copied it to c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin and office 2007 rolled on to install itself. I have searched everywhere for a fix office 2007 install to my problem, which does not seem to be widespread, and nowhere has this solution been stated. so i hope it may help others. thanks again for your help NOTE: you can also copy those files from another computer running XP Posted by computerboom at 6:34 PM 12 comments: sergioccgSeptember 21, 2009 at 10:46 PMthank you very very much... hope I've found your post before reinstalling all the system :S... PD.- in my case it was fp4ault.dll, not fpault.dllReplyDeletemherSeptember 17, 2010 at 5:37 AMi did not find fpault.dll in I386\FP40EXT.CAB on my xp installer but instead i copied all the dll files that i saw in that cab. This works for me.. Thanks alot!ReplyDeleteAnonymousDecember 23, 2010 at 2:08 PMby the time you read this I probably would have installed Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007. This totally worked for me. Except that I found no file with the name of fpault.dll. I found a file in my cd fp4Autl.dll. I extracted that to c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin and it totally worked! thanks!ReplyDeletejwalitMarch 27, 2011 at 10:13 AMthanx fp4ault.dll worked 4 me........ReplyDeleteAnonymousMay 24, 2011 at 2:43 AMthanks a lot man it works fine...ReplyDeletesupriyonoJune 21, 2011 at 7:31 PM
this issue or may run in to this in the near future. I did a re-image today on a system and was boggled for a few minutes when I received the following error while trying to install Office 2007 Enterprise:"The windows installer service cannot update one or more protected windows files."hmm... ok let's try that again... Nope.. same error...Ok time to take a look at the Event Viewer:"Product: Microsoft Software Update for Web Folders (English) 12 -- Error 193 The Windows Installer service cannot update one or more protected Windows files. SFP Error: -536870654.List of protected files: C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin\fp4autl.dll"Weird... After checking this directory there happened to be no such dll file.Ok then... here's the Quick Fix:download fp4autl.dll hereThen place it into the c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin\ folder and then re-run the installation of office and you should be in business. This has been a known issue since Office 2000 - you can check out the MS documentation here. Posted by Stephen Smith at 10:52 PM 31 comments: Maja said... Thank you so much for this post.
