Operating System Error 32(failed To Retrieve Text For This Error. Reason 15105)
SQL Server 2008 Database Restore Error - Cannot open backup device 15105 up vote 5 down vote favorite 1 I am trying to restore from a backup and getting the following error Msg 3201, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'Z:\FULL_BACKUP.bak'. Operating system error 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. The code that I used in SQL Server 112(failed to retrieve text for this error. reason: 15105). is as follows (I also tried using the dialog screens and got the same result) RESTORE DATABASE DEX FROM DISK = 'Z:\FULL_BACKUP.bak' WITH MOVE 'Decri' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.mdf', MOVE 'Decri_log' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.LDF' It may be worth noting that the "FULL_BACKUP" is created by the same SQL server, without any issues (so I assume that the server has permissions). Drive Z is a network path, for which there is 'full access' to all domain users. The full backup is 200Gb Drive E (local) has 500Gb free space Any help would be appreciated. sql sql-server sql-server-2008 backup share|improve this question asked Oct 15 '13 at 11:34 SeanAnderson_Fullingdale migrated from stackoverflow.com Oct 15 '13 at 11:46 This question came from our site for professional and enthusiast programmers. 1 Was the full backup created WITH INIT? Can you create a very simple database, back it up to that same location, and try restoring it the same way? (This will separate whether the problem is the drive or the file.) –Aaron Bertrand♦ Oct 15 '13 at 12:32 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 13 down vote OS Error code 3 is ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND: The system cannot find the path specified. With a path starting with Z: my pshyhic powers tell me it is a mapped drive. Drive mapping is session scoped and I'm convinced your service session does not see Z:. Map

Now I would like restore this database in my machine. But I get the following error: Cannot open backup http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/53153/backup-and-restore-database-occured-system-error-5 device 'C:\Program Files...\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS...\file.bak'. Operating system error 5(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105). RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3201) Of course I searched the Internet, for example: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/805661f1-cf23-4230-ae31-d9cc16505359/cant-restore-backup-from-2005-to-2008r2?forum=sqlexpress But all users have permissions to all folders so I'm really confused. Reason: 15105). (Microsoft.SQLServer.Smo) An article by contactng 7 Comments When trying to take Microsoft SQL Server database backup to a network shared disk then receiving following error, Error text: Cannot open backup device "\\xxxxxxxx\xxxx.bak" . Operating System Error 5 (failed to retrieve text for this operating system error error. Reason: 15105). (Microsoft.SQLServer.Smo) The error may vary, you may also receive Operating system error 5(Access denied) and that too for local disk instead of network disk. But symptom is same. Solution to fix this issue, 1. Go to network share (where the actual folder is shared) 2. Right click and go to "Sharing and Security…" option, click it 3. Go to "Sharing" tab and then click permissions settings, 4. Give Full access privilege to the account which is taking backup (if running under SQL server service account context then give full privileges to the domain account), if you are not much concerned on security for the activity then give full privileges to EVERYONE temporarily and once activity is complete revoke it 5. After adding necessary accounts and privileges, click Apply and OK 6. Now go to "SECURITY" tab, add all accounts to whom you have given access permissions in STEP 4 and give them FULL Control or write privileges as deemed necessary, if not concerned for security then give EVERYONE account full control for the activity and then revoke later 7. Once done click Apply and then OK 8. Now try to take backup, it should happen successfully. Hope this solves issue!
