When SQL Server was installed, it hopefully was set up to use a domain user account (the "service account") that is NOT an administrator on the machine. As such, the SQL Server installer only grants permissions to the folders the SQL Server setup creates. share|improve this answer answered Apr 18 '12 at 17:34 HardCode 4,31122047 Yeah, that's the problem. The code that I used in SQL Server is as follows (I also tried using the dialog screens and got the same result) RESTORE DATABASE DEX FROM DISK = 'Z:\FULL_BACKUP.bak' WITH MOVE 'Decri' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.mdf', MOVE 'Decri_log' TO 'E:\Test\DEX.LDF' It may be worth noting that the "FULL_BACKUP" is created by the same SQL server, without any issues (so I assume that the server has permissions). Can you create a very simple database, back it up to that same location, and try restoring it the same way? I just need to right click on SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) and click on properties and go to security tab and then I will get to know which account is responsible in running SQL Service and that account should have read write permission to the shared back up folder..Is this right? Ans: yes, on backup share, the database engine account should have permission. I try to restore that backup file to SQL Server Express and get the following error: Cannot open backup device 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\TEST.BAK'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) When restoring other files, I would get this same error message, copy it to another folder and it would work. With this particular one, no matter what folder I copy it to I get the same error message. From what I can find online is that its a permission thing, but I cant find anywhere to change the permissions. Any help is appreciated.
