there are different ways to resolve it. I recently faced this error and for a while I was

taking backup and found a very interesting solution to the problem. The error was as mentioned below:Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/207187 ‘d:\Log\aw.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. Personally, I know this error happens whenThere is no directory with LogThere is not enough space on drive d:\There is not enough permissions on d:\Log driveIn my case all of the above were not the reason for above http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2014/12/08/sql-server-fix-error-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-5access-is-denied/ error. The error was there because of the file was read only. There was already another backup file which existed in the folder with the name aw.bak and it was marked as read only. Due to the same reason, my backup was failing. Once I removed the checkbox for reading only, the backup was successful. Here are few other blog posts related to this error, which I have written earlier.SQL SERVER – FIX – ERROR : Msg 3201, Level 16 Cannot open backup device . Now I would like restore this database in my machine. But I get the following error: Cannot open backup device 'C:\Program Files...\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS...\file.bak'. Operating system error 5(failed to retrieve text for operating system error this error. Reason: 15105). RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3201) Of course I searched the Internet, for example: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/805661f1-cf23-4230-ae31-d9cc16505359/cant-restore-backup-from-2005-to-2008r2?forum=sqlexpress But all users have permissions to all folders so I'm really confused. What is the RESTORE command you ran? –Aaron Bertrand♦ Nov 11 '13 at 23:05 I would like restore my database. So in Object Explorer I click right on Databases -> restore database -> mark from device and then I find my file *.bak and occur these problem. –Tomek Nov 11 '13 at 23:10 2 So what happens when you stop using the UI/crutch and write a RESTORE HEADERONLY command, like RESTORE HEADERONLY FROM DISK = 'C:\...\file.bak';? –Aaron Bertrand♦ Nov 11 '13 at 23:10 The same problem: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'C:\...\file.bak'. Our software first creates the dump device using a path with a folder created with the current date-time so it is unique. The error is happening for one of clients running our software where the dump device is using a network drive. It works for any of the new databases that were created recently. All the databases are on SQL Server 2000. The backup works if I create the dump device to a known path (path that exists already). But for the other databases it works just fine the otherway. The backup is called through the software and can't be changed right now for a simple fix. The backup process backs up the SQL part and other important data files. The sample commands being called (It errors directly in Query Analyzer).exec sp_addumpdevice N'disk', N'AFW02_20050622155554', N'F:\DATA\Backup\AFW02_20050622155554\AFW02_20050622155554.bak' BACKUP DATABASE [AFW02] TO [AFW02_20050622155554] WITH NOINIT , NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'AFW02_20050622155554', NOSKIP , STATS = 10, DESCRIPTION = N'AFW02_20050622155554', NOFORMATThe error is:3201160Cannot open backup device '%ls'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details. It is a networked drive and the folder AFW02_20050622155554 doesn't exist yet. It is actually created when backuping a database to the dump device. Again it works just fine for any of the newer created databases. And it works even to the network drive if I just change the backup path in the dump device to the existing Backup folder. The problem is I need to get it to work the existing way that it works currently in the software. It works fine for the other databases. Any ideas? Thanks,Daniel Post #201108 Site OwnersSite Owners Posted Monday, July 18, 2005 8:00 AM SSChampion Group: General Forum Members Last Login: Friday, May 18
