Sql Server Cannot Open Backup Device Operating System Error 2
SQL Server Management Studio Express. I have changed PCs and the set up on my old machine worked perfectly. I have tried to set up everything on my new PC exactly the way it was on the old one, but when I try to restore form a cannot open backup device operating system error 5 failed to retrieve file I get the following error message:TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express------------------------------An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:Cannot open backup device 'C:\SQL downloads\UKCTOCS_PsyTOCS_db_200809100115.BAK'. Operating system error 5(error not found).RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. I'm wondering whether it's a permissions thing, but my login account works and is exactly the same as on my old PC (as far as I can make out...).Can anyone help please? Thanks! SERVER - FIX - Error 3201 - Cannot open backup device. Operating system error 3 January 30, 2015Pinal DaveSQL Tips and TricksNo CommentsThis blog is in continuing to use the default values. Earlier this week I wrote a blog which talked about cannot open backup device operating system error 32 the failure of Create Database Command. Let see in this blog post how operating system error 3(failed to retrieve text for this error. reason: 15105). we can solve the error 3201.While working on the reproduction of the issue, I changed the parameters and later realized error 3201 kyocera that the backup database command was also failing. If you rely on the default values for folders that don’t exist, this will raise an error message as shown below. Here is the simple https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/1f0d9ce1-d469-4885-b123-92f74bfa9062/sql-express-2005-restore-error-microsoft-sql-server-error-3201?forum=sqldatabaseengine command which I have run: BACKUP DATABASE MASTER TO DISK = 'master.bak' The command was failing with below error. Here is the text of the message shown in image: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot open backup device ‘E:\InvalidPath\master.bak'. Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. If you notice the error message http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2015/01/30/sql-server-fix-error-msg-3201-level-16-state-1-line-1-cannot-open-backup-device-operating-system-error-3the-system-cannot-find-the-path-specified/ is pretty clear. The backup is going to path “E:\InvalidPath” which is an invalid folder on my system. Important point to note here is that I have NOT given any file path in the command, I have just given file name master.bak.The question is, from where the path is picked? If you have read my previous blog, it’s picked from “BackupDirectory” value in registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014\MSSQLServerThe highlighted portion might change based on SQL Version and Instance ID. For me it’s MSSQL12 because this is SQL Server 2014 instance. And my instance name is SQL2014:SQL VersionFolder NameSQL Server 2008MSSQL10SQL Server 2008 R2MSSQL10_50SQL Server 2012MSSQL11SQL Server 2014MSSQL12For example, if you have SQL Server 2012 default instance, it would be MSSQL11.MSSQLServer.Here is the registry valueWe can change it via SQL Server Management Studio too. You can right click on server node and go to properties. Then choose “Database Settings” tab.If you want to use T-SQL then here is the script. EXEC xp_instance_regwrite N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE', N'Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer', N'BackupDirectory', REG_SZ, N'E:\InvalidPath' GO NOTE: Once you have changed the value, SQL Service restart is needed so that SQL can pick-up changed values. Now that we have seen a couple of examples where using the default value

In this window, when I specify in Form Device the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\exper.bak and an error dialog appears:An exception occurred while executing a Transacct-SQL statement or batch.Cannot open backup device 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\exper.bak'. Operating system error 5(error not found). RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server,Error:3201)I've tried also using the commandRESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM DISK = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Backup\exper.bak'from SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express. It produces the same error message:Msg 3201, Level 16, State 2, Line 1Cannot open backup device 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Backup\exper.bak'. Operating system error 5(error not found).Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1VERIFY DATABASE is terminating abnormally. If I try this command with a SQL server 2005 backup it works ok:The backup set on file 1 is valid. If I do these 2 tests, with a similar command in SQL Server
