I actually have several backup files of the sql server operating system error 3 same database (taken at different times in the past). The newest ones are restored without any problems; however, one of them gives the following error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Directory lookup for the file "C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT SQL SERVER\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\MYDB_ABC.MDF" failed with the operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoExtended) This is a x64 machine, and my database file(s) are in this location: c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL. I do not understand why it tries to restore on MSSQL.1 and not MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER. sql-server database exception-handling restore sql-server-2012 share|improve this question edited May 24 '12 at 17:15 marc_s 453k938651031 asked May 24 '12 at 16:11 Marius Bancila 11.3k62970 3 This has nothing to do with version problems. This has worked fine for a box that I did this morning but now I'm getting some errors on this second box. I am doing the following : Right click Database http://serverfault.com/questions/79120/sql-server-restore-database-failed-error-not-found > Restore Database... To database : "myDb" From Device : C:\myDbBkp.bak Check the backup set, and click OK Normally it would give a popup saying "Import sucessful", but now I get the following : Restore failed for server "myServer". (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) Additional Information : System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError : Directory lookup for the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Sql Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\myDbBkp.mdf" failed with the operating system error 3(error not found) (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) My next questions are : Why is it trying to load an MDF file from a directory I haven't specified Error not found, is that as helpful as it sounds? Any ideas? I did this successfully earlier on an identical environment with the same versions etc. Many thanks sql-server-2005 backup-restoration share|improve this question asked Oct 28 '09 at 14:59 user155695 2502413 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted It’s not trying to load an MDF from a directory you haven’t specified, it’s trying to PUT it there (because it was there in the first place). Instead of doing step #4, check it and don’t click “OK", but then go to OPTIONS and make sure that both the Data path and the log path (And .MDF/.LDF names) are OK and unique. Alternatively, create the path *C:\Program Files\Microsoft Sql Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA

If you're doing the restore through Sql Managment Studio then you can change the path each file will be restored to by going to the "Options" page and changing the "Restore As" value. I have posted a script that you just need to change the database name and data/log filename and the location you need to restore. Prior to this you can run the first command to find out about the database file names if you don't know. For the example I assume that your database name is mydb1. Once you restore your database in dev environment you may want to change the recovery mode to simple if you don't want/need to take

Msg 1802, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors. As per him he had gone crazy to find solution. He had been trying to create database and he had all the admin privileges. After getting remote desktop, I realize that he was everything correct but the filepath he was trying to create. Once he corrected the filepath everything was smooth from there. If you have the same error I suggest you carefully check your filepath. There must be some typo or error in filepath. If that is not the case and with admin rights you are still facing issue, post a comment here.Reference: Pinal Dave (http://blog.SQLAuthority.com) Tags: SQL Error MessagesRelated Articles SQL SERVER - Fix Error 1949, Level 16: Cannot create index on view. I was trying to create database in a path like this: C:\programs\MyProgram\MyProgram.mdb and what solves my problem was runnig sql server not by local account but by using a computer account. Is this the macthing of the admin privileges
